Riviera Maya High Season 2026/27: Cancún to Tulum Guide

Riviera Maya high season from December to April: Cancún Hotel Zone, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras, Akumal and Tulum compared, plus sargassum, cenotes and transfers.

High season on the Riviera Maya

The Riviera Maya's high season runs from December to April, when the Caribbean coast between Cancún and Tulum is dry, sunny and warm while Europe and North America are in winter. Almost all visitors arrive through Cancún International Airport (CUN), which serves the whole coast along Highway 307.

Winter is also the time with the lowest sargassum risk. The seaweed generally arrives in spring and summer, and December to February are usually the clearest months for beaches, although 2026 brought some unusual early arrivals. Daytime temperatures are typically in the high 20s °C, with cooler evenings when a northerly front passes through.

Where to stay: the coast from north to south

Cancún Hotel Zone (about 25 min)
A long strip of large resorts between the lagoon and the sea, with restaurants, nightlife and shopping. Convenient for short stays and for those who want everything in walking or bus distance.
Puerto Morelos (about 25 min)
A small fishing town with a protected reef close to the shore and resorts spread along the beach. Calmer than Cancún, good for snorkelling and families.
Playa del Carmen (about 50 min)
A lively town built around the pedestrian Fifth Avenue, with beach clubs, many restaurants and the ferry to Cozumel. Large resort areas such as Playacar lie just south of the centre.
Puerto Aventuras and Akumal (about 1h10)
A marina community and a quieter bay further south. Akumal is known for sea turtles; access to the bay and swimming areas is regulated, so follow local rules and use authorised guides.
Tulum (about 1h45)
Maya ruins on a cliff above the sea, a town centre inland and boutique hotels along the beach road. Popular with couples and travellers who prefer a more relaxed, nature-focused stay.

Holiday weeks and what to book early

Demand is not even across the season. US Thanksgiving (26 November 2026) marks the start of the busy period, and the weeks around Christmas and New Year are the most in demand of the year, with high hotel rates and full flights. Late January and February are busy but steadier. March brings US spring break crowds, especially in Cancún, and Easter week (Holy Week), which in 2027 ends on Easter Sunday, 28 March, is a peak for Mexican travellers too.

For these dates, book hotels, restaurant reservations for the holiday evenings, popular cenote and reef tours and your airport transfers well ahead. Arrivals at Cancún are concentrated in the early afternoon, so immigration and the arrivals hall can be busy; share your flight number with your transfer provider so the driver can follow delays.

Cenotes, reefs and sargassum

Cenotes, the natural freshwater sinkholes of the Yucatán peninsula, are a highlight in any season. Some are open-air pools, others are caves for swimming, snorkelling or guided cave diving. Many ask visitors to shower before entering and to skip sunscreen and insect repellent to protect the water. The area inland from Puerto Morelos and the surroundings of Tulum have a wide choice.

Sargassum can still appear in winter in some years, and conditions change from week to week and from beach to beach. Local monitoring services publish regular beach status reports. If seaweed is present, the cenotes, the reef off Puerto Morelos and the islands offer good alternatives.

From Cancún Airport to your hotel

Drive times from Cancún Airport are about 25 minutes to the Hotel Zone or Puerto Morelos, about 50 minutes to Playa del Carmen, about 1 hour 10 minutes to Puerto Aventuras and about 1 hour 45 minutes to Tulum. South of the airport the route follows Highway 307, a dual carriageway with speed bumps and junctions near the towns.

For the longer drives to Akumal and Tulum, a private transfer booked through HotelTaxi takes you straight to your hotel without stops at other resorts, which matters after a long-haul flight and with children. Child seats can be requested when you book. For the return, leave Tulum at least 4 hours 30 minutes before an international flight, Playa del Carmen at least 3 hours 30 minutes, and Cancún hotels at least 3 hours.
