Unlike the resorts on the sheltered south and east coasts, Famara faces the open Atlantic on the north-west side of the island. The ride takes you across the interior to a low-rise surf village below the Famara cliffs.

The drive across the island to Famara

  1. Leaving the coast

From the terminal the car heads inland on main roads towards the centre of Lanzarote, away from the busy resort coast.

  2. Through the interior

The route crosses farmland and volcanic plains around San Bartolomé and Teguise, the island's old capital, on quiet two-lane roads.

  3. Across El Jable

The last stretch runs over El Jable, a wide plain of pale, wind-blown sand, with the long wall of the Risco de Famara rising ahead.

  4. Into the village

Caleta de Famara is small, and many of its streets are covered in sand rather than tarmac. The driver gets as close to your door as the street allows.

What to expect in Caleta de Famara

Famara is a fishing village turned surf base, part of the municipality of Teguise. Accommodation is mostly holiday apartments, surf houses and the bungalow complex near the beach, rather than large hotels. There are a few small shops, cafés and fish restaurants, and evenings are quiet.

The beach stretches south of the village beneath the cliffs, which belong to the Chinijo Archipelago natural park. It is beautiful for walking, but the Atlantic here brings strong waves and currents, so swimming is best kept to calm days and areas recommended locally.

Travelling with surfboards and kites

Most visitors come to surf, kitesurf or take lessons with one of the surf schools in the village. Board bags do not fit in every car, so declare the number and length of boards when booking. A minivan or a vehicle with suitable space is then sent.

If you plan to rent boards locally, you can travel with standard luggage and a car is usually enough for up to three people.
