The town faces one of the longest sandy bays in the central Algarve. Fishing boats are still pulled up on the beach at its eastern end, and apartment blocks and hotels line the seafront.
Driving from FAO to Armação de Pêra
From the airport the route follows the A22 past Albufeira and then turns south towards the coast near Alcantarilha. Since January 2025 the motorway is toll-free. The final section crosses farmland and small roundabouts before reaching the seafront.
The time range depends mainly on traffic at the Albufeira junctions and on where your hotel stands. Addresses on the seafront in the town centre are reached a little sooner than resorts on the cliffs to the west, which are approached on smaller roads above the coves.
A family beach resort
Armação de Pêra is calmer than Albufeira and popular with families and Portuguese holidaymakers. The wide beach and the promenade are easy to walk with children, and the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Rocha on its headland marks the western end of the bay.
Hotels and resorts also extend to the west towards Porches, and to the east along the dunes towards Salgados, where there is a golf course. Some of these addresses are a few kilometres outside the town.
