Where is Faro Airport and how is the Algarve laid out?

Faro Airport lies on the coast a few kilometres west of Faro city, next to the Ria Formosa lagoon. It is the main airport of the Algarve, so nearly every beach and golf holiday in southern Portugal starts here.

The Algarve is a long, narrow strip of coast. Almost every resort sits west of the airport, strung along the A22 motorway (Via do Infante) and the older EN125 road that runs parallel to it closer to the sea. The A22 runs from Castro Marim on the Spanish border to Lagos and has been free of tolls since January 2025. Beyond Lagos, the last stretch to Sagres continues on ordinary roads.

Resort areas served from FAO and typical drive times

About 35–44 minutes. Marina, five golf courses and the long seafront promenade of Quarteira.
Albufeira
About 47–59 minutes. Old town, the Strip and a ring of beach hotels from Olhos de Água to Galé.
Armação de Pêra
About 49–62 minutes. A wide sandy bay with a fishing beach and apartments along the front.
Carvoeiro
About 61–77 minutes. A cliff-top village surrounded by villas and holiday estates.
Portimão & Praia da Rocha
About 65–82 minutes. A broad beach below the cliffs, high-rise hotels and the Arade river.
Lagos and Sagres
Lagos about 73–92 minutes, Sagres about 92–115 minutes at the south-western tip of Europe.

Which vehicle do you need: families, groups and golf bags

A standard private car suits one to three travellers with normal suitcases. Families, groups of friends and anyone with bulky luggage are usually better off in a minivan for up to about seven passengers; larger vehicles can be arranged on request.

Golf is a year-round reason to fly into Faro, and in spring and autumn many arrivals come with clubs. Please declare golf bags, bicycles or surfboards when you book so the provider sends a vehicle with enough room. Child seats can also be requested at booking.

How your arrival at Faro works

  1. Book and share your flight

Choose your destination and vehicle online or on WhatsApp and add your flight number, so the provider can follow any delay.

  2. Passport control and baggage

Travellers from outside the Schengen area, including the UK and Ireland, pass passport control first. Queues can be long on busy summer weekends.

  3. Meet your driver

Your driver waits at the meeting point in the arrivals hall with your name. The local provider confirms the details with you by phone or WhatsApp.

  4. Private ride to your door

You travel directly to your hotel, villa or apartment, with no shared stops. The agreed price does not change for traffic or a late flight.

When the Algarve is busiest

The beach season runs roughly from March to October, with the heaviest traffic in July and August and around school holidays. Weekend changeover days bring many flights in at once, and the roads into the resorts slow down in the afternoon. Golf keeps the airport busy in spring, autumn and winter as well.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Faro Airport from the main Algarve resorts?

Vilamoura and Quarteira are the closest at about 27 km. Albufeira is around 50 km, Portimão and Praia da Rocha about 77 km, Lagos about 95 km and Sagres about 120 km.

Are there tolls on the way from Faro Airport?

The A22 motorway that links the airport with the western Algarve has been toll-free since January 2025. In any case, the price you agree when booking is the total for your ride.

Can I bring golf clubs in a private transfer from Faro?

Yes. Golf bags are common on Algarve transfers, but they take up space, so please add them when you book. For several golfers with bags, a minivan is usually the right choice.

What happens if my flight to Faro is delayed?

Add your flight number when you book so the provider can track arrival changes. The price stays as agreed and the driver plans around the actual landing time.

Is the transfer shared with other passengers?

No. Every HotelTaxi ride is private, so the vehicle takes only you and your group, directly to your address without stops at other hotels.
