The Palm is a man-made island shaped like a palm tree, and where your hotel sits on it, trunk, fronds or outer crescent, changes the last part of the drive more than anything else.
How is Palm Jumeirah laid out?
The island has three parts. The trunk is the central spine with apartment towers, hotels and shopping. The fronds branch off it and are mostly private villas and holiday homes. The crescent is the outer ring, where most of the large beach resorts stand, including Atlantis at the far tip.
The crescent is reached through an underwater road tunnel from the top of the trunk. Resorts at the far ends of the crescent can be a further 10 minutes from the tunnel exit, so the hotel name is essential for timing.
The drive, step by step
Across the city
From DXB the car joins Sheikh Zayed Road and runs south-west past Downtown and Al Barsha, the slowest part at rush hour.
Onto the Palm
The road to the island leaves Sheikh Zayed Road near Dubai Internet City and runs straight up the trunk.
Tunnel or frond
Villa guests turn off onto their frond, often through a security gate. Resort guests continue through the tunnel to the crescent.
Hotel entrance
Large resorts have a covered arrival area where staff help with luggage.
Staying in a villa on the fronds
Private villas on the fronds have gated access, and security may ask the driver for the villa number and the guest's name. Send the villa number, frond and owner contact when you book, and keep your phone on after landing in case the provider needs to confirm details at the gate.
Families and resort stays
The Palm is popular with families who want a beach resort with pools and water parks on site. That usually means more luggage, a pushchair and child seats, all of which you can request when booking a minivan.
HotelTaxi books the ride with a local transfer company that knows the Palm's access roads. You can book online or on WhatsApp and pay through HotelTaxi.
