Niseko and Hokkaido Powder Season 2026/27: Dates and Resorts
Niseko United plans to open on 28 November 2026. When the powder peaks, how Niseko, Rusutsu, Kiroro and Furano compare, and how to get there from New Chitose Airport.
When the 2026/27 season starts
Niseko United, the four linked ski areas of Annupuri, Niseko Village, Grand Hirafu and Hanazono, plans to open on Saturday 28 November 2026, snow permitting. Rusutsu, Kiroro and Furano have also announced late-November openings, and all four destinations are reached from New Chitose Airport (CTS) near Sapporo in about 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes.
In Niseko, night skiing is planned from 12 December 2026 to 22 March 2027. Grand Hirafu and Annupuri plan to run until early May 2027, while Niseko Village and Hanazono close in early to mid-April. All dates are set by the resorts and can change with conditions, so check them again shortly before travelling.
When the powder is best
Hokkaido’s famous dry snow comes with cold north-westerly air from Siberia picking up moisture over the Sea of Japan. Snowfall usually builds through December, and the most consistent powder days are typically from late December to early February, with January often the coldest and snowiest month.
Early December can be excellent but is less predictable; some years start slowly. March brings longer, sunnier days and softer snow, which many families and intermediate skiers enjoy, though fresh powder is less frequent.
The busiest periods are Christmas to New Year and the weeks around Chinese New Year, which falls on 6 February 2027. The Sapporo Snow Festival runs from 4 to 11 February 2027 and fills hotels in Sapporo, so book early if you plan to combine it with a ski trip.
Niseko, Rusutsu, Kiroro or Furano
- Niseko (about 2 h 30 min from CTS)
- The largest and most international destination, with four ski areas on Mount Annupuri and a wide choice of restaurants, bars and apartments in Hirafu. Lift queues and village crowds are heaviest in the festive weeks. A good fit for groups who want variety off the slopes.
- Rusutsu (about 1 h 45 min)
- A single large resort spread over three peaks, known for tree skiing and long groomed runs. Most guests stay in the resort hotels, which suits families who want everything in one place.
- Kiroro (about 1 h 40 min)
- The closest of the four, set in a snowy valley inland from Otaru with very high average snowfall. Quieter, with a handful of large hotels. Good for skiers who care more about snow than nightlife.
- Furano (about 2 h 30 min)
- Inland in central Hokkaido, colder and often drier than the coast. The resort sits next to a real working town with local restaurants and izakaya. Two zones, Furano and Kitanomine, which usually open a few weeks apart.
Winter roads, luggage and skis
Driving in Hokkaido in winter is a different discipline: roads are often snow-packed or icy, visibility can drop quickly in snowstorms, and the routes to Niseko and Furano cross mountain passes. Local vehicles run on winter tyres, but if you are not used to these conditions after a long-haul flight, a professional driver is the safer choice.
Ski bags, boot bags and large suitcases for a long stay take up a lot of room. Declare every item when you book your transfer so the right vehicle is sent; a family of four with skis usually needs a van rather than a car. Many travellers also use Japan’s luggage forwarding services to send bags ahead to the hotel.
HotelTaxi arranges private transfers from New Chitose Airport with local transfer companies that drive these roads all winter. The ride goes straight to your hotel without stops for other passengers, which matters after a long flight with children or after a late arrival.
Planning checklist
Book accommodation early
Christmas, New Year and early February sell out first, especially in Hirafu.
Check opening dates again
Opening and night-skiing dates are subject to snow. Confirm on the resort site a week before travel.
Pack for real cold
Thermal layers, a neck warmer, goggles for snowfall and boots with grip for icy village streets.
Plan the return
Leave Niseko or Furano about five hours before your flight, Rusutsu or Kiroro about four and a half hours, more after heavy snowfall.
Frequently asked questions
When does Niseko open for the 2026/27 season?
Niseko United plans to open all four ski areas on 28 November 2026, depending on snow. Night skiing is planned from 12 December 2026.
What is the best month for powder in Niseko?
January is usually the most reliable month for deep, dry snow. Late December and early February are often very good as well, though they are also among the busiest weeks.
How long is the transfer from New Chitose Airport to Niseko?
About 2 hours 30 minutes in normal winter conditions. Rusutsu and Kiroro are closer, at around 1 hour 45 and 1 hour 40 minutes. Heavy snowfall can add time.
Is Rusutsu or Niseko better for families?
Rusutsu suits families who want ski-in hotels and everything in one resort. Niseko offers more choice in restaurants and lodging, but is busier and more spread out.
