New Chitose Airport transfer
This page covers private transfers from New Chitose Airport (CTS) to the main ski areas of Hokkaido: Niseko, Rusutsu, Kiroro and Furano. You book one vehicle for your own group, see the total price before you confirm, and a driver meets you in the arrivals area.

New Chitose is the main gateway for skiers and snowboarders heading to Hokkaido from December to March. The resorts lie between roughly 90 and 130 km from the airport, and in winter every one of those drives runs on snow-covered roads, which is why a door-to-door ride is the most practical way to arrive.
Transfers from this airport
Arriving at New Chitose Airport in ski season
New Chitose sits south-east of Sapporo, and most ski travellers land here from Australia, Asia or North America, often after a connection through Tokyo or another hub. A large share of winter arrivals land in the afternoon or evening, so many transfers start after dark and reach the mountains late at night.
Your driver waits at the meeting point in the arrivals area with a name sign. Share your flight number when booking: the local provider follows the flight and confirms the exact meeting place with you by phone or WhatsApp. Baggage reclaim can take a while when several long-haul flights land together and ski bags come out on separate belts, and the pickup is planned with that in mind.
Ski resorts served from New Chitose
- Niseko (Hirafu, Annupuri, Hanazono)
- 111 km, usually 120–150 minutes. Several connected villages on Mt Annupuri facing Mt Yotei, with the widest choice of restaurants, lodges and apartments in Hokkaido. Popular with international families and groups.
- Rusutsu
- 90 km, usually 98–123 minutes. One large resort spread over three mountains, with its own hotel complex at the base. Easy for families who want everything in one place.
- Kiroro
- 108 km, usually 96–120 minutes. Known for very heavy snowfall and a quieter, compact base area in the mountains inland from Otaru.
- Furano
- 129 km, usually 116–145 minutes. An inland farming town with its own ski area, drier powder and a real town centre with restaurants.
Winter roads and drive times
All four routes leave the airport area and climb into hill and mountain country, and from December to March the roads are usually covered with packed snow or ice. Local drivers run winter-equipped vehicles on these roads every day, but they drive at a speed that suits the conditions.
The times above are typical. During heavy snowfall, strong wind or poor visibility the journey can take noticeably longer, and on rare days roads are closed for a period. The price you agree does not change if the drive takes longer than planned.
Choosing a vehicle for ski luggage
- Standard car
- For 1–3 passengers with suitcases. Ski or snowboard bags often do not fit in a car boot, so declare them when booking and a larger vehicle may be sent.
- Minivan
- For families and groups of up to about 7, or smaller groups with several ski bags. The most common choice for Hokkaido ski transfers.
- Larger vehicles
- Available on request for bigger groups or ski clubs travelling together with a lot of equipment.
Getting back to New Chitose for your flight
For the return, a simple rule works well: take the longest typical drive time for your resort, add the time your airline recommends before departure, and then add a winter buffer of about an hour. From Niseko or Furano that usually means leaving around five hours before an international flight.
If snow is forecast on your departure day, leave earlier rather than later. Check-in queues at New Chitose can be long on the busiest change-over days of the season.
Frequently asked questions
How far is New Chitose Airport from the Hokkaido ski resorts?
Rusutsu is about 90 km away, Kiroro about 108 km, Niseko about 111 km and Furano about 129 km. In normal winter conditions the drives take roughly one and a half to two and a half hours. Storms can make them longer.
Is the transfer shared with other passengers?
No. The vehicle is booked for your group only and goes directly to your accommodation, with no stops at other hotels.
What happens if my flight to New Chitose is delayed?
Share your flight number when booking so the local provider can follow your arrival. The agreed total price does not change because of a delayed flight.
Do I need to book a bigger vehicle for ski equipment?
Often yes. Ski and snowboard bags take more space than suitcases, so declare them when booking. A minivan is the usual choice once you have more than one or two ski bags.
Can I arrive late in the evening?
Yes. Many winter flights land in the evening and transfers run after dark. Keep in mind that some resort restaurants and shops close early, so plan dinner or groceries for your first night.
