What Rusutsu is like
Unlike Niseko, Rusutsu is not a village of separate lodges but one large resort spread over three mountains: East Mountain, West Mountain and Mt Isola. The resort runs its own hotel complex at the base, with restaurants, shops and indoor activities under one roof.
That makes it popular with families and with skiers who prefer tree runs and quieter slopes. Once you arrive, you rarely need a car again during the stay.
From the arrivals hall to Rusutsu
Meeting your driver
The driver waits at the arrivals meeting point with a name sign. Details are confirmed with you by phone or WhatsApp.
Leaving the Chitose area
The first part crosses the flat, open land around the airport before the road heads west into hills and forest.
Through the hills
Most of the drive runs on two-lane roads through snowy forest, where packed snow and ice are normal in winter.
Arriving at the resort
You are dropped at the entrance of your hotel or condominium building within the resort.
Winter driving on the way to Rusutsu
The roads to Rusutsu are among the shorter ski transfers from New Chitose, but they are still winter mountain roads. During heavy snow the trip can take longer than two hours, and drivers slow down for visibility and road surface.
If you land on a late flight, the last part of the drive is in darkness. The fixed price agreed before booking does not change if the journey takes longer.
Return pickup from Rusutsu
Use the 123-minute upper drive time, add your airline's recommended check-in time and a winter buffer of about an hour. For most international flights that means leaving Rusutsu about four and a half hours before departure.
