How long is the drive from New Chitose Airport to Niseko?
In normal winter conditions plan on two to two and a half hours. The road leaves the flat land around Chitose and crosses forested hill country and mountain passes before Mt Yotei comes into view on the approach to Niseko.
From December to March the roads are usually covered in packed snow and ice, and drivers adjust their speed to the conditions. During heavy snowfall or strong wind the drive can take considerably longer, so allow extra time if your plans depend on arriving by a certain hour.
Which Niseko village are you staying in?
- Hirafu
- The largest and busiest village, with most of the restaurants, bars and rental shops. Accommodation is spread over a sloping hillside with narrow, snowbanked streets.
- Hanazono
- Quieter, at the north-eastern end of the ski area, with newer and more spread-out accommodation and wide views of Mt Yotei.
- Annupuri
- On the western side of the mountain, calmer and more relaxed, with a smaller selection of lodges and pensions.
Skis, snowboards and family luggage
Most people arriving in Niseko bring board bags, ski bags and boot bags in addition to suitcases. Declare every item when booking: a group of three with skis often needs a minivan rather than a car.
Families with small children can request child seats.
Arriving in the evening
Many flights land in the evening, so you reach Niseko well after dark. Restaurants in Hirafu are often fully booked in peak weeks, so reserving dinner or buying basic supplies in advance makes the first night easier.
The busiest arrival periods are the Christmas and New Year weeks, January and the Lunar New Year holiday.
Going back to New Chitose from Niseko
Take the 150-minute upper end of the drive, add the check-in time your airline recommends and about an hour for winter conditions. For an international flight that usually means leaving Niseko around five hours before departure, and earlier if snow is forecast.
