Kiwengwa, on the north-east coast, is where many of Zanzibar’s larger beach resorts are located. A coral reef runs offshore, sheltering a wide lagoon.

Kiwengwa at a glance

Resort coast
Many hotels here are larger, often all-inclusive resorts with their own grounds, pools and gated entrances.
Reef and lagoon
The reef offshore breaks the waves. Inside it the water is calm, but the tide decides how deep it is.
Inland
The Kiwengwa–Pongwe forest area behind the coast has walking trails and caves that hotels can arrange visits to.

From the airport to the resorts

Kiwengwa is one of the closer beach areas to the airport. The route crosses the centre of the island north-east through farmland and villages and then joins the coast road, along which the resorts are lined up.

Most resorts are on the main coast road, with private drives leading to reception. The driver can usually drop you at the entrance, and resort staff take over with the luggage.

Families and groups in Kiwengwa

Because many resorts are built for families and groups, minivans are a common choice here. A minivan seats up to about seven with luggage, and larger vehicles can be requested. Child seats should be requested when booking.

If your group is arriving on different flights, book separate transfers so nobody waits at the airport.

Excursions from Kiwengwa

Stone Town is a day trip away, and boat trips to Mnemba Atoll leave from nearby beaches. Private transfers between Kiwengwa and Stone Town can also be booked.

For your departure, leave about four and a quarter hours before an international flight: up to 75 minutes on the road plus around three hours at the airport.
