This south-east coast village is Zanzibar’s kitesurfing centre. Its long white beach and wide, shallow lagoon draw kiters, backpackers and travellers looking for small boutique hotels.
Crossing the island to Paje
From the airport the road heads south-east across the middle of Unguja. You pass farmland and villages, and then the edge of Jozani forest, home of the national park known for its red colobus monkeys. After the forest the road continues straight to the coast and meets the sea at Paje.
It is one of the more direct cross-island drives, with the usual village speed bumps and police checks along the way.
Kitesurfing and tides in Paje
Paje’s lagoon is protected by an outer reef, and the steady trade winds make it a favourite kite spot. The main wind seasons are roughly December to February and June to September.
The tide changes everything here. At low tide the water withdraws far towards the reef, leaving sandbanks and pools; at high tide the lagoon fills and swimming becomes easier. Kite schools and hotels plan sessions around the tide times.
Staying in Paje
The village has changed from a simple backpacker stop into a mix of hostels, kite lodges and boutique hotels. Most places are along the beach road or a short walk from it, and some are reached by sandy lanes where the driver stops at the closest point.
Paje is also a practical base: Jambiani lies to the south, Bwejuu and Michamvi to the north, and Jozani forest is a short drive inland.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take from Zanzibar Airport to Paje?
The 49 km drive usually takes 64–80 minutes. The road crosses the island past Jozani forest and has many speed bumps in villages.

Typically around €40–55 for a car and €55–70 for a minivan. The exact price is shown before booking and stays the same on the day.
Can I bring my kitesurfing equipment?
Yes, as long as you declare it when booking. The provider then sends a vehicle with enough space for boards and kite bags.
Can I swim in Paje at any time?
Not always. At low tide the sea retreats far out, so swimming is best around high tide. Check the tide table at your hotel.
