Narita International Airport (NRT) → Lake Kawaguchiko transfer
Lake Kawaguchiko is 181 km from Narita Airport, usually a 184–230 minute drive, and a private transfer typically costs around €560–720 by car or €680–880 by minivan. The exact total is shown before booking; check in the offer whether expressway tolls are included.

This is the longest of the Tokyo airport transfers to the Fuji area. Haneda is 55 km closer to the lake, so choose it if you can; if you land at Narita, a direct car is the simplest way to get to Fuji the same day.
How long does it take from Narita to Lake Kawaguchi?
Usually three to almost four hours. The first half is getting past Tokyo: the car runs west from Chiba and crosses or circles the city on the expressway network, choosing the route by traffic. Weekday rush hours and holiday weekends make the biggest difference.
West of Tokyo the expressway climbs into the hills of Yamanashi, and on a clear day Fuji fills the view as you approach Fujiyoshida. The lake lies at about 830 metres, noticeably cooler than the coast.
Making a four-hour ride easier
- Pick a minivan
- Even for two or three people, a minivan gives room to stretch out on a long drive, plus space for big suitcases.
- Plan a stop
- A break at an expressway service area is normal on this route. Ask for one when booking.
- Mind the clock
- An afternoon landing means reaching the lake in the evening. Tell your hotel or ryokan your expected arrival time.
Where you will stay
Kawaguchiko is the main resort of the Fuji Five Lakes, with hotels and ryokan around the shore. The north side faces Mount Fuji across the water, and many rooms and open-air baths are built for that view. If your hotel is on Lake Saiko, Shojiko or Motosuko, give its name when booking, as the drive continues farther west.
Autumn leaves, cherry blossom and the Fuji view
Autumn colour around the lake usually peaks in November, and cherry blossoms open in April, later than in Tokyo. Fuji is most reliably clear on cold mornings from late autumn to early spring and is often hidden in spring haze. After a long transfer, staying at least two nights gives you more than one chance of a clear morning.
Frequently asked questions
Is Narita or Haneda better for Kawaguchiko?
Haneda. It is 126 km from the lake against 181 km from Narita, so the transfer is shorter and costs less.
Is it worth driving straight to Mount Fuji after a long flight?
It means a long day, but you avoid changing trains in Tokyo with luggage and wake up next to the lake. With a late landing, a first night near Narita can be more comfortable.
Can we see Fuji on the way?
On clear days the mountain appears on the final approach to the lake. It is often hidden by cloud, especially in spring and summer.
Are expressway tolls included in the price?
The total shown before booking does not change for traffic or delays. On a route this long, tolls are a large part of the cost, so check that the summary lists them as included.
Is there snow on the road?
From about December to March, snow and ice are possible around the Fuji lakes. Transfer vehicles use suitable tyres in season, but allow extra time.
