Narita is not the ideal airport for Hakone: Haneda is 66 km closer and the ride from there is well over an hour shorter. If your flight lands at Narita, though, a direct car spares you a train journey across Tokyo with luggage.
Crossing Tokyo: the route from Narita to Hakone
The first part of the ride runs west through Chiba towards Tokyo. From there the driver either goes through the city on the elevated expressways, loops around it on the outer ring road, or crosses Tokyo Bay, depending on traffic at that hour.
Once past Tokyo and Yokohama, the car follows the Tomei expressway corridor towards Odawara and climbs into Hakone from Yumoto. The mountain section is short but slow, with tight bends up to Miyanoshita, Gora, Sengokuhara and Lake Ashi.
Your arrival day, step by step
Landing and meeting
After immigration and baggage claim, your driver meets you in arrivals with a name sign. Share your flight number when booking so the provider follows the real landing time.
Chiba and Tokyo
The longest and least predictable part. Weekday rush hours slow the expressways; a midday landing usually crosses most smoothly.
Into the mountains
From Odawara the road climbs to your ryokan. Hotels on Lake Ashi add the most time.
Will I reach my ryokan in time for dinner?
Ryokan in Hakone often start check-in around 3 pm and serve dinner at a set time. With up to three and a half hours on the road, a late-morning landing usually gets you there for dinner. After an afternoon or evening landing, tell the ryokan your expected arrival, or book a first night near Narita and continue the next day.
Seasons in Hakone
Cherry blossoms usually reach Hakone in early April, and autumn leaves peak in November, along with the pampas grass at Sengokuhara. Weekends in both seasons bring slow traffic in the valley, on top of an already long ride.
Returning to Narita
Plan the pickup about 7 hours before an international flight: up to about three and a half hours of driving, a margin for Tokyo traffic and around 3 hours at the airport. For a morning flight, a last night in Tokyo or near Narita is usually the more comfortable choice.
Frequently asked questions
Is Narita or Haneda better for Hakone?
Haneda. It is 91 km from Hakone against 157 km from Narita, so the drive is about an hour shorter and the price lower.
Why does the transfer take more than three hours?
Narita lies far east of Tokyo and Hakone far west, so the car crosses the entire metropolitan area. City traffic is the main reason the time varies.
Can the driver go straight to our ryokan?
Yes. If the ryokan is on a narrow lane or a steep drive, the driver stops at the nearest point a vehicle can reach.
Are tolls included?
The total shown before booking does not change for traffic or delays. Expressway tolls are a large part of the cost on this route, so check that the summary lists them as included.
Can we book a child seat?
Yes, request it when booking and give the child's age. On a ride this long, a proper seat matters.
