Narita International Airport transfer

This page covers private transfers from Narita International Airport (NRT) directly to Hakone and to Lake Kawaguchiko in the Fuji Five Lakes area. HotelTaxi does not offer rides from Narita into Tokyo itself: the service here is the long trip west to the onsen and Mount Fuji region, booked with a local transfer company at a total price agreed before you travel.

Narita is in Chiba, well east of Tokyo, and both destinations lie on the far side of the city. Expect a long ride, and plan your arrival day around it.

Transfers from this airport

What a Narita to Hakone or Fuji transfer involves

From Narita the car has to cross the whole Tokyo region before the mountains begin. Depending on live traffic, the driver goes through the city on the elevated expressways, around it on the outer ring expressway, or across Tokyo Bay, then continues west.

That makes these some of the longest airport transfers in Japan: roughly three to four hours on the road. The advantage is that you sit in one vehicle from the arrivals area to your ryokan, instead of changing trains in central Tokyo with your luggage after a long flight.

Destinations served from Narita

Hakone
157 km, usually 170–213 minutes. Hot-spring resort in the hills beyond Odawara, with ryokan from Hakone-Yumoto up to Gora, Sengokuhara and Lake Ashi. Typically around €500–650 by car.
Kawaguchiko (Fuji Five Lakes)
181 km, usually 184–230 minutes. Lake resort at the northern foot of Mount Fuji, with hotels facing the mountain. Typically around €560–720 by car.

Narita or Haneda for Hakone and Mount Fuji?

If you have the choice, Haneda is the better airport for both places. It lies south of Tokyo on the side facing the mountains, so the drive is shorter by roughly an hour or more, and the price is lower.

Many long-haul and low-cost flights still land at Narita, though. When that is your airport, a direct private transfer is the simplest way to reach Hakone or Kawaguchiko on arrival day without the train changes.

Meeting your driver at Narita

Your driver waits in the arrivals area with a name sign. Narita has several terminals, so share your flight number when booking. The local provider follows the actual landing time and confirms the meeting point with you by phone or WhatsApp. The agreed price stays the same if your flight is late.

Planning the long ride

Late arrivals
An evening landing at Narita can mean reaching Hakone or the lake close to midnight. Many ryokan have a latest check-in time and serve dinner early, so tell them your timing, or consider a first night near the airport.
Rush hour in Tokyo
Weekday morning and evening peaks slow the expressways through the city. Midday landings usually give the smoothest crossing.
Comfort stops
On a ride of three hours or more, a short break at an expressway service area is normal. Mention it when booking if you know you will want one.

Car or minivan

Standard car (1–3 passengers)
Suits couples and small parties with two large suitcases. Boot space in Japanese sedans is modest.
Minivan (up to about 7)
More room to stretch out on a long ride, and space for families, groups, golf bags or skis. Typically around €620–800 to Hakone and €680–880 to Kawaguchiko.

Seasons and prices

Cherry blossoms reach Hakone and the Fuji lakes in late March and April, and autumn colour usually peaks in November. Both seasons, and Golden Week around late April and early May, mean busier roads out of Tokyo. Mount Fuji is most often visible on clear, cold days from late autumn to early spring.

Private transfers in Japan are expensive, and on these routes long distances and expressway tolls add up. The ranges above are indicative. The exact total is shown before booking; check that the summary lists tolls as included.

Flying home from Narita

Plan the pickup about 7 hours before an international flight from Hakone and about 7½ hours from Kawaguchiko. That allows for the drive, congestion around Tokyo and around 3 hours at the airport. For a morning departure that means leaving in the middle of the night, so many travellers spend their last night in Tokyo or near Narita instead.

Frequently asked questions

Does HotelTaxi offer transfers from Narita to central Tokyo?

No. From Narita, HotelTaxi only offers the long private transfers to Hakone and the Fuji Five Lakes area.

How long is the drive from Narita to Hakone or Mount Fuji?

Usually 170–213 minutes to Hakone and 184–230 minutes to Kawaguchiko. Traffic in Tokyo is the biggest variable.

Should I switch my flight to Haneda?

If the fares and times work for you, Haneda gives a shorter and cheaper ride to both destinations. If not, the direct transfer from Narita still saves several changes with luggage.

What if my flight lands late at night?

The transfer can still run, but you will arrive very late. Check your ryokan's latest check-in time first, and mention a late arrival when booking.

Can we bring golf bags or skis?

Yes. Declare them when booking so a vehicle with enough space is sent, usually a minivan.
