Haneda is the better Tokyo airport for the Fuji Five Lakes. From Narita, the same trip is 181 km and often takes over an hour longer.

The drive from Haneda to Mount Fuji

The ride is almost all expressway. The car heads west from the bay through the suburbs of Tokyo and Kanagawa and then into the hills of Yamanashi. Depending on traffic, the driver chooses between the routes north of the mountains or via the Tomei side and Gotemba.

On a clear day, Fuji appears ahead as you approach Fujiyoshida, and the last stretch drops down to the lake. Kawaguchiko lies at about 830 metres, so it is usually several degrees colder than Tokyo.

Staying at Lake Kawaguchi

Kawaguchiko is the most developed of the Fuji Five Lakes. Hotels and ryokan line the shores, and the ones on the north shore look straight across the water at Fuji, many with open-air baths facing the mountain. The station area on the east side has more simple hotels and guesthouses.

If your hotel is on Lake Saiko, Shojiko or Motosuko instead, mention it when booking: those lakes are farther west, and the drive is longer.

When to come

Autumn
Leaves usually turn in November, and the maple-lined path on the north shore draws large crowds. Traffic around the lake is heavy on weekends.
Spring
Cherry blossoms here usually open in April, later than in Tokyo. Fuji is often hazy in spring, so allow more than one morning for photos.
Winter
The clearest views of Fuji, but snow and ice are possible. Transfer vehicles use suitable tyres in season; allow extra time.

Luggage and the train alternative

By rail you cross Tokyo and usually change trains on the way, with suitcases on busy platforms. A private ride avoids that. A standard car takes two to three people with two large suitcases; for families, groups or ski and golf bags, book a minivan and declare the equipment.

Back to Haneda from Kawaguchiko

For an international flight, plan the pickup about 6 hours before departure. That covers up to about two and a half hours of driving, a margin for congestion near Tokyo and around 3 hours at the airport. On Sunday afternoons and at the end of holidays, add an extra hour.

Frequently asked questions

Is Haneda or Narita better for Kawaguchiko?

Haneda. It is 126 km from the lake against 181 km from Narita, so the ride is shorter and less expensive.

Will we see Mount Fuji from the car?

Often, on clear days, especially on the final approach to the lake. Fuji is hidden by cloud on many days, particularly in spring and summer.

Can you drive to the other Fuji lakes?

Yes, hotels at Lake Saiko, Shojiko or Motosuko can be reached by car. Give the hotel name when booking, as the drive is longer than to Kawaguchiko.

Is it cold at Kawaguchiko?

Colder than Tokyo, as the lake is at about 830 metres. Bring a warm layer in spring and autumn, and winter clothing from December.

Are tolls included in the price?

The total shown before booking does not change for traffic or delays. Check that the summary lists expressway tolls as included, since they are a significant part of the cost.
