Haneda is clearly the better Tokyo airport for Hakone: it sits south of the city, facing the mountains, so the ride is well over an hour shorter than from Narita.

How long is the drive from Haneda to Hakone?

Count on 97–122 minutes in normal traffic. The car leaves the airport on the bayside expressways, runs west through the Kanagawa suburbs and follows the Tomei expressway corridor towards Odawara before turning into the hills at Hakone-Yumoto.

The last part is the slow part. Above Yumoto the roads climb in tight bends to Miyanoshita, Gora and Sengokuhara, and on autumn weekends traffic can queue here. Hotels on Lake Ashi are the farthest from the airport.

Where is your hotel in Hakone?

Hakone-Yumoto
The gateway town at the bottom of the valley, with many ryokan along the river. The shortest ride in Hakone.
Miyanoshita and Gora
Higher up the mountain, with historic hotels, onsen ryokan and the area around the Open-Air Museum. Add some time for the climb.
Sengokuhara
A quieter plateau with resort hotels and museums, known for its pampas grass fields in autumn.
Lake Ashi
Moto-Hakone and the lakeshore, where clear days bring views of Mount Fuji across the water. Usually the longest part of the drive.

Large suitcases: private ride or train?

By train, you first cross Tokyo to Shinjuku for the Romancecar or take the shinkansen to Odawara and change there, and the small mountain railway above Yumoto has little room for luggage. Many train travellers send suitcases ahead with a delivery service.

With a private car, the bags stay with you and go straight to the ryokan entrance. For two people with large suitcases a standard car is enough. A family or anyone with golf bags should book a minivan.

Best time to travel

Cherry blossoms reach Hakone a little after Tokyo, often in early April, and autumn colour usually peaks in November. Weekends in both seasons bring crowds and slower roads. In winter, the higher roads can see snow or ice; transfer vehicles use suitable tyres in season, but allow extra time.

Going back to Haneda from Hakone

For an international flight, plan the pickup about 5½ hours before departure, and around 6 hours from Lake Ashi or on a Sunday afternoon. That covers up to about two hours of driving, a margin for traffic on the way into Tokyo and around 3 hours at the airport.

Frequently asked questions

Is Haneda or Narita better for Hakone?

Haneda. The drive is 91 km against 157 km from Narita, which means roughly an hour less in the car and a lower price.

Can the driver take us right to our ryokan?

Yes, the ride ends at your accommodation. A few ryokan sit on narrow lanes or steep driveways, in which case the driver stops at the nearest point a vehicle can reach.

Are expressway tolls included?

The total is shown before booking and does not change for traffic or delays. Tolls are a real part of the cost on this route, so check that the booking summary lists them as included.

Is a child seat available?

Yes, child seats can be requested when booking. Give the age of each child so the right seat is prepared.
