The road to the Mara via Narok

From Nairobi the route climbs out of the city, descends the Rift Valley escarpment towards Mai Mahiu and crosses the valley floor to Narok, the last sizeable town and a usual place for a break. From Narok the road continues south-west to Sekenani, one of the main gates of the Maasai Mara National Reserve.

The road beyond Narok has been improved in recent years, but conditions can still vary, and after rain some sections are slow. Expect the last part of the trip to feel rougher than the highway.

Beyond the gate

This transfer is priced to Sekenani Gate. Many camps lie well beyond it inside the reserve or in the surrounding conservancies, reached on unpaved tracks where a 4x4 may be needed. Check in your offer whether your camp is included, or whether the camp will collect you at the gate.

Reserve and conservancy entry fees are not part of the transfer and are paid separately according to the rules of the reserve or your camp.

When to travel

Migration season
The great wildebeest migration is typically in the Mara between July and October, the busiest time for camps.
Rainy months
The long rains usually fall around April and May, and short rains around November. Tracks inside the reserve can then become muddy.
Daylight
Leave Nairobi in the morning so you reach the gate and your camp before dark.
