JKIA lies on the south-eastern edge of the city, off Mombasa Road. Hotels in the centre and Westlands are usually under half an hour away in light traffic, while the Rift Valley lakes, Mount Kenya and the big parks are a half-day drive. You book online or on WhatsApp and see the full price before you confirm.

Transfers from this airport

Arriving at Nairobi's main international gateway

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is Kenya's main gateway for long-haul flights from Europe, the Gulf, Asia and the rest of Africa. Many flights land in the evening or early morning, when a waiting driver is especially welcome.

Your driver meets you in the arrivals area with a name sign. The local provider confirms the exact meeting point with you by phone or WhatsApp; sharing your flight number lets them follow delays. Expect security checks on the roads into and out of the airport, which is normal in Nairobi and adds a few minutes.

Where travellers go from NBO

Nairobi CBD and Westlands
Business hotels, government offices, restaurants and nightlife. Around 16–18 km, typically 23–29 minutes outside rush hour.
Gigiri
The UN Office at Nairobi, many embassies and the Village Market area. About 25 km, typically 35–44 minutes.
Karen
Leafy suburb with boutique hotels, close to the Giraffe Centre and the elephant orphanage. About 32 km, typically 42–53 minutes.
Lake Naivasha and Nakuru
Rift Valley lakes and national parks. Naivasha is about 107 km (roughly 2¼–2¾ hours); Nakuru about 177 km (roughly 4–5 hours).
Nanyuki and Mount Kenya
Gateway to Laikipia conservancies such as Ol Pejeta. About 200 km, roughly 3¾–4¾ hours.
Amboseli and the Maasai Mara
Kenya's best-known safari parks. Amboseli is about 214 km (4½–5¾ hours); Sekenani Gate in the Mara about 245 km (around 5–6 hours).

Nairobi traffic and the Expressway

The drive times above are typical free-flow times. Nairobi's traffic is heavy on weekday mornings and evenings, and a city ride can take considerably longer at those times. Late-night and weekend arrivals usually move more freely.

The Nairobi Expressway, an elevated toll road, links the JKIA area with Westlands. Whether your driver uses it depends on the time of day and the route, so check your offer if you want to know how tolls are handled rather than assuming they are included.

A night in Nairobi before the safari

Many safari travellers spend their first night in Karen, Westlands or Gigiri and start the long drive the next morning. It lets you recover from the flight and leave for the parks in daylight.

For road trips into the Rift Valley, to Mount Kenya or to the parks, plan to arrive before dark. The final stretches towards Amboseli and the Mara are rougher than the main highways, and park entry fees are paid separately from the transfer. Kenya has its own visa and entry rules, so check the current requirements before you travel.

Wilson Airport, a separate airport in Nairobi, handles many light-aircraft safari flights. There is no airside link from JKIA, so you need a road transfer between the two.

Choosing a vehicle

A standard car suits one to three passengers with normal luggage. Families and groups of up to about seven usually take a minivan, and larger vehicles can be requested. Safari bags tend to be soft and compact, but camera gear and extra luggage for a long trip add up, so say what you are bringing.

For Amboseli and the Mara a safari-style 4x4 such as a Land Cruiser can be requested; it is usually priced higher than a minivan. Child seats are available on request when you book.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Jomo Kenyatta Airport from central Nairobi?

The airport is about 16 km from the Central Business District. Outside rush hour the drive usually takes 23–29 minutes, but weekday peak traffic can make it much longer.

Can I go straight from NBO to a safari park?

Yes. Private transfers run directly to Amboseli, the Maasai Mara, Lake Naivasha, Nakuru and Nanyuki. These are drives of roughly 2 to 6 hours, so many travellers who land late prefer a night in Nairobi first.

Does the price change if my flight is late?

No. The total price is shown and agreed before you book and does not change for traffic or a delayed flight. Add your flight number so the local provider can follow your arrival.

Can I transfer from JKIA to Wilson Airport?

Wilson is a separate airport in Nairobi with no airside connection to JKIA, so a road transfer is needed. Allow generous time, as the drive crosses busy parts of the city.

How do I book a transfer from Nairobi airport?

You can book online on hoteltaxi.com or arrange it on WhatsApp. HotelTaxi works with a local transfer company that carries out the ride, and payment goes through HotelTaxi.
