How long is the drive from Lisbon Airport to Ericeira?
The trip is short because the airport sits next to the motorway network north of Lisbon. The car follows the ring road to the A8 heading north, then turns west on the A21 past Mafra, whose huge baroque palace and convent is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The motorway ends just outside Ericeira.
Traffic leaving Lisbon on weekday evenings can slow the first part of the trip. At other times the drive usually stays close to half an hour.
About Ericeira and its surf coast
Ericeira is a fishing town of white houses with blue trim, set on low cliffs above the Atlantic. In 2011 its coastline became a World Surfing Reserve, protecting a chain of reef and point breaks such as Ribeira d'Ilhas and Coxos.
Accommodation is spread out. Besides hotels in town there are surf houses, camps and apartments in villages like Ribamar, Santo Isidoro and Foz do Lizandro. The old centre has narrow, partly pedestrian lanes, so give the exact address when booking and the driver will stop at the closest point by road.
Travelling with surf equipment
- Declare your boards
- State how many boards you bring and the length of the longest one. Shortboard bags often fit in a car, longboards need a minivan.
- Groups and surf camps
- A minivan takes up to about seven surfers with board bags and wetsuits. Larger groups can ask for a bigger vehicle.
- Season
- Autumn and winter bring the strongest swells and experienced surfers, while summer has smaller waves and surf schools are busy.
Frequently asked questions
Is Ericeira closer to Lisbon Airport than Cascais?
In time, usually yes. Ericeira is 41 km away but the motorway runs almost all the way, so the transfer takes about 29–37 minutes, while Cascais is reached in roughly 43–54 minutes.
Can the driver take me to a surf camp outside town?
Yes. Many camps and surf houses are in nearby villages or along the coast road. Share the exact address or location when booking so the price and route fit.
Do surfboards cost extra on the transfer?
Equipment has to be declared when booking so a suitable vehicle is sent. The price you see before confirming already reflects that vehicle, so there is no surprise on the day.
Can we stop at Mafra Palace on the way?
Mafra lies directly on the route. A stop can be arranged with the provider when booking, but tell us in advance because it changes the duration of the ride.
