The drive follows the Zakopianka, the main road from Kraków to the Tatras. Its timing depends heavily on the day you travel, which is worth knowing before you choose your flight.

How long does the drive to Zakopane really take?

On a quiet weekday the transfer usually takes about an hour and a half. From the airport the driver joins the Kraków ring road, then follows the expressway south past Myślenice into the hills, and continues via Nowy Targ to Zakopane.

On Friday afternoons and Saturdays in winter, traffic heading for the mountains can build into long queues, especially on the single-carriageway sections near Nowy Targ and at the entrance to Zakopane. On those days, allow for a longer drive than the typical time.

Where you will be staying

Zakopane is spread out along the foot of the Tatras. Hotels and guesthouses range from the centre near Krupówki, the main pedestrian street, to wooden highland houses on steep side lanes and quieter areas towards Kuźnice, where the Kasprowy Wierch cable car starts.

Krupówki itself is closed to traffic, so if your accommodation is on or just off it, the driver stops at the nearest point a car can reach. Some hillside lanes can be icy, and the driver will choose the safest place to stop.

Skiing from Zakopane

Kasprowy Wierch
The high-mountain ski area of the Tatras, reached by cable car from Kuźnice. Queues for the cable car are common on busy days.
Smaller slopes nearby
Zakopane also has smaller ski slopes around the town that suit beginners and short ski days.
Equipment
Declare ski and board bags when booking. Many skiers rent equipment locally, which can mean a smaller vehicle.

Returning from Zakopane to Kraków Airport

Book your pickup about 4 hours before your flight departs. On Sunday afternoons the road north fills with weekend visitors returning home, so on that day, or if snow is forecast, allow 4.5 hours.
