Most people who make this trip are heading for one address: the thermal resort designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, which opened in 1997 and is his largest architectural project. The village around it is small and rural, with a handful of guesthouses and farm stays.

From the runway to the grass roofs

  1. Onto the A2

The driver leaves the airport and joins the Süd Autobahn (A2) heading east, past the southern edge of Graz.

  2. East Styrian hills

Beyond Gleisdorf the motorway runs through gentle farmland and orchards. This is the longest and quickest part of the ride.

  3. Exit Sebersdorf/Bad Waltersdorf

The resort's own directions use this exit. The last stretch of roughly 7 km follows country roads through Bad Waltersdorf towards Bad Blumau.

  4. Arrival

The resort sits on the edge of the village. The final approach is short and flat, without mountain roads.

What makes Bad Blumau different

The resort looks nothing like a conventional spa hotel. Buildings rise out of the ground under walkable grass and forest roofs, with colourful facades, golden domes and hundreds of windows in which no two are alike. The eye-slit houses and the hill-meadow houses are part of the complex, so many guests come as much for the architecture as for the water.

The thermal water was found in the 1970s during test drilling for oil. Its hottest spring, Vulkania, emerges at over 100 °C and is used first to generate energy before it cools for bathing.

Who travels to Bad Blumau

Couples on a short break
Two or three nights is typical. A car is enough for two people with weekend luggage, even with a pair of bathrobes and a camera bag.
Architecture and art fans
If you plan to photograph the site, a weekday arrival in daylight shows the roofs and facades best in winter, when the days are short.
Friends travelling together
Groups of four or more fit better in a minivan, which also keeps everyone in one vehicle for the return.

Catching your flight home

With up to 57 minutes on the road and about two hours at the airport, leave Bad Blumau roughly three hours before departure. On a Sunday afternoon, when many weekend guests head back towards Graz at the same time, add a little extra.
