How long is the drive from Dabolim to Palolem?
Plan for about one and a half to almost two hours. The route follows the NH66 south through Salcete, past Margao and Cuncolim, and then climbs into a forested hill section known as the Karmal Ghat before dropping down into Canacona.
The ghat road is winding, with slow trucks and buses, so the driver cannot always overtake. A bypass around Canacona town then leads towards the coast and Palolem. Between November and March the road is dry; in the monsoon months heavy rain can slow the ghat section considerably.
Palolem and the Canacona coast
Palolem is a crescent-shaped bay lined with palms, where much of the accommodation is in seasonal beach huts and small cottages. The sea is usually calm in the season, and kayaks and boat trips to nearby coves are part of everyday life here.
Neighbouring Patnem is quieter and popular with families and yoga visitors, while Agonda, a little to the north, has a long, peaceful beach. The transfer price varies slightly depending on which of them you choose. Agonda is slightly closer than Palolem, Patnem slightly further.
Before you set off
- Car-sickness on the ghat
- If children or adults in your group get car-sick, mention it. The driver can stop briefly at a safe place.
- Beach-hut drop-off
- Cars cannot drive onto the sand. The driver stops where the road ends behind the beach, and hut staff usually help carry bags.
- Early season
- Beach huts are rebuilt every year after the monsoon. In the first weeks of November some are still being finished.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a transfer from Dabolim to Palolem?
Usually around €40–52 for a car and €55–70 for a minivan. The price is agreed before booking and does not change for traffic or flight delays.
Is Palolem far from Mopa Airport?
Yes, Mopa is at the opposite end of Goa, and the drive would take several hours. For Palolem, Dabolim (GOI) is clearly the better airport.
Can you also go to Agonda or Patnem?
Yes. Both are on the Canacona coast near Palolem. Enter your exact accommodation when booking so the right price is shown.
Is the drive safe at night?
The local drivers use this road daily. The hill section is unlit in places and is driven carefully, which is why night drives can take nearer the upper end of the time range.
Can we stop for food on the way?
A short stop is usually possible on a drive of this length. Mention it when booking or tell the driver at the start.
