Kandy was the last royal capital of Sri Lanka and is home to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. Many travellers make it the first stop of a round trip through the hill country and the Cultural Triangle.
Why 114 km takes almost three hours
There is no expressway all the way from the airport to Kandy. The drive runs inland on main roads through towns such as Kegalle, shared with buses, lorries and tuk-tuks, and in the last part it climbs into the hills on a winding road.
Depending on traffic, the driver may use part of the newer Central Expressway or the traditional Kandy road. The final kilometres into Kandy are often congested, especially in the late afternoon.
Kandy, the Temple of the Tooth and the lake
The centre of Kandy is built around a lake, with the Temple of the Tooth on its northern shore. The sacred city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and daily ceremonies at the temple draw pilgrims as well as visitors.
At around 500 metres above sea level, Kandy is noticeably cooler at night than the coast. Nearby sights include the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya and the tea estates in the surrounding hills.
Practical points for staying in Kandy
- Hillside hotels
- Many hotels are on steep, narrow roads above the lake or outside the city. Give the exact hotel name so the driver knows the best approach.
- Temple dress code
- Cover shoulders and knees and remove shoes before entering the Temple of the Tooth. A light scarf in your hand luggage helps.
- Esala Perahera
- This great procession takes place in July or August. Hotels fill up and parts of the centre close in the evenings, so book early.
- Onward travel
- From Kandy many travellers continue to Nuwara Eliya or Ella, often by the scenic train through the tea country.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the drive from Colombo Airport to Kandy?
About 159–199 minutes for 114 km. The route uses ordinary main roads through towns and a hill section, so it is slower than the coastal expressway routes.
What does a transfer from CMB to Kandy cost?
Typical prices are around €50–65 for a car and €65–90 for a minivan. The exact price is shown before booking.
Can we stop at the Pinnawala elephant orphanage on the way?
Pinnawala lies near the Kandy road, but a visit means a detour and extra time. Arrange it when booking so the price reflects the longer trip.
Is the hill road difficult for people prone to travel sickness?
The last part has bends but is not a high mountain pass. If you are sensitive, sit in front, avoid reading and ask the driver for a short break.
Is it worth going straight to Kandy after landing?
If you land in the morning, yes, and you arrive in time for an evening walk by the lake. After a long night flight some travellers prefer a first night on the coast.
