Hikkaduwa is livelier than the resorts further north. Divers and snorkellers come for the reef, surfers for the breaks, and many visitors simply for the beach cafés and the sea turtles that swim close to the shore.

From the airport to Hikkaduwa, stage by stage

  1. Katunayake to Colombo's ring road

The drive starts on the expressway from the airport towards Colombo, then follows the outer ring road around the city instead of crossing the centre.

  2. Southern Expressway

Most of the distance is on the Southern Expressway, which runs inland through green countryside, rubber plantations and paddy fields. This is a toll road, so check whether your offer includes the tolls.

  3. Back to the coast

The driver leaves the expressway at an interchange in the Galle area and drives the last kilometres to the coast and onto Galle Road.

  4. Along the Hikkaduwa strip

Hotels and guesthouses line Galle Road and the beach for several kilometres, so the driver takes you directly to your address.

What Hikkaduwa is known for

Coral reef
A protected reef lies just off the main beach. Snorkelling and glass-bottom boat trips start right from the sand when the sea is calm.
Surf
Hikkaduwa has reef breaks that suit surfers with some experience. Complete beginners often find gentler conditions further south in Weligama.
Sea turtles
Green turtles regularly feed in the shallows near the beach. Watch them, but do not feed or touch them.
Diving
Several dive centres run trips to reefs and wrecks along this coast during the calmer months.

Choosing when to arrive

Hikkaduwa's best months are roughly November to April, when the sea is calmer for snorkelling and diving. From about May to September the south-west monsoon brings bigger waves and more rain to this coast.

For the trip back, leave Hikkaduwa about 6 hours before an international departure. That allows for the upper drive time of about 165 minutes, around three hours at the airport and some margin.
