This route serves two very different stays: the historic walled town of Galle, and the beach village of Unawatuna a few kilometres beyond it.
Galle Fort or Unawatuna: two different stays
Galle Fort was built by the Portuguese and greatly expanded by the Dutch in the 17th century. Its ramparts, churches, colonial houses and small boutique hotels are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and many people stay inside the walls for the atmosphere at sunset on the ramparts.
Unawatuna lies just east of Galle, around a curved, sheltered bay. It suits travellers who want to swim, snorkel and eat by the beach, and still reach the fort quickly by tuk-tuk.
Driving into the fort
Cars can enter Galle Fort through its gate, but the lanes inside are narrow and some are one-way. If your hotel is on a lane the vehicle cannot reach easily, the driver stops at the nearest accessible point and you walk the last short distance. Hotel staff often help with luggage.
Unawatuna and the bays nearby
- Unawatuna Bay
- A half-moon bay with beach restaurants and guesthouses close together. The sea is usually calm here in the main season.
- Jungle Beach and Rumassala
- A small cove below the wooded Rumassala hill, with the white Japanese Peace Pagoda above it.
- Dalawella and the coast beyond
- Quieter stretches with villas and small hotels continue further east along the coast towards Koggala.
The road down and the road back
The transfer uses the expressways from Katunayake around Colombo and then the Southern Expressway, leaving it near Galle for the last short stretch into town. These are toll roads, so check whether the offer includes the tolls.
For your departure, leave Galle or Unawatuna about 6 hours before an international flight. This allows for the upper drive time of about 174 minutes, about three hours at CMB and a little margin.
