Downtown Cairo & Zamalek
Distance
22 km
Typical drive
42–53 min

This is the shortest of the main transfers from CAI and takes you into the heart of the capital: the hotels on the Nile corniche, the Tahrir area with the Egyptian Museum, and Zamalek on Gezira Island in the middle of the river.

The drive into central Cairo

From the airport the car heads south-west through Heliopolis and eastern Cairo towards the river. Depending on traffic, the driver may use one of the main corridors such as the 26th of July axis, which continues across Zamalek and over the Nile.

The distance is short, but central Cairo is where traffic is at its densest. Late evenings and early mornings are usually smooth, while weekday rush hours and Thursday evenings can stretch the ride beyond the usual range.

Downtown or Zamalek: which area are you staying in?

Downtown and Tahrir
The busy commercial centre built in the late nineteenth century, with the Egyptian Museum, cafes, older hotels and many budget stays in historic buildings.
Nile corniche
Large international hotels along the east bank of the river, many with Nile views and easy access to the Tahrir area.
Zamalek
The residential northern part of Gezira Island, with tree-lined streets, embassies, galleries, boutique hotels and riverside restaurants.

Arriving at a hotel in an older Downtown building

Many smaller hotels in Downtown occupy upper floors of historic apartment blocks, sometimes with an old lift and a shared entrance. Streets around them are often one-way and short-term stopping can be tight, so the driver pulls up as close to the door as possible.

It helps to share the exact name of the building or a hotel phone number when booking. The local provider can then confirm the drop-off point before your arrival.

Returning from the centre to the airport

For an international flight, ask to be picked up about four hours before departure. The 42–53 minute drive can become much longer at rush hour, and arriving around three hours early gives you time for security checks at CAI.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the transfer from Cairo Airport to Zamalek?

Usually 42–53 minutes for the 22 km. In heavy traffic it can take longer, and the price stays the same whatever the traffic.

What does a private transfer to Downtown Cairo cost?

Typically around €20–30 for a private car and €30–45 for a minivan. The exact price is shown before you confirm the booking.

Can I go from the airport to a Nile cruise boat in central Cairo?

Yes, if the boat is moored in Cairo you can enter its mooring point or the operator's address as the drop-off. Check the exact location with your cruise company before booking.

Is Zamalek a good base for a first visit to Cairo?

Many visitors like it because it is calmer than Downtown yet close to the Egyptian Museum and the corniche. For the Pyramids you will need a longer drive west to Giza.
