Transfers from this airport
Where is Cairo Airport and what is the city like to cross?
CAI lies in the north-east of Greater Cairo, near Heliopolis and the newer districts of eastern Cairo. That position matters: the historic centre and the Nile islands are to the south-west, the Pyramids of Giza are on the far western edge of the metropolitan area, and both coasts are a long drive away.
Greater Cairo is one of the largest cities in Africa and its traffic is dense for much of the day. A drive that is quick late at night can take much longer at the evening rush. Drivers choose between the ring road and the inner-city corridors depending on the hour, so the same trip can follow different roads on different days.
Drive times from CAI to the main destinations
- Downtown Cairo & Zamalek
- 22 km, typically 42–53 minutes. Nile-side hotels, the Tahrir area and the leafy island district of Zamalek.
- Giza Pyramids
- 49 km, typically 66–83 minutes across the city to the Pyramids plateau and the hotels around Al Haram.
- Ain Sokhna
- 143 km, typically 98–123 minutes east through the desert to the Red Sea coast on the Gulf of Suez.
- Alexandria
- 237 km, typically 187–234 minutes via the desert road to Egypt's Mediterranean port city.
Arriving at CAI: visa, terminals and meeting your driver
Cairo Airport has several terminals, and EgyptAir and its partner airlines mainly use Terminal 3. Assignments for other airlines change from time to time, so add your flight number when you book. The local provider then follows your flight and knows which terminal to come to.
Many visitors need a visa for Egypt, either as an e-visa arranged in advance or, for some nationalities, on arrival before passport control. Allow time for this and for baggage, especially when several long-haul flights land together. Your driver waits in the arrivals area with a name sign, and the exact meeting spot is confirmed by phone or WhatsApp.
Which vehicle suits your trip?
- Private car
- For one to three travellers with normal luggage. A good fit for city hotels in Zamalek, Downtown or Giza.
- Minivan
- For families and groups of up to about seven, or when you carry several large cases for a longer tour of Egypt.
- Larger vehicles
- Minibuses can be requested for study trips, wedding parties and tour groups landing on the same flight.
When do most visitors come to Cairo?
The main sightseeing season runs from October to April, when days are warm rather than hot and walking around Giza or Islamic Cairo is comfortable. Summer is very hot inland, and many Egyptian families then head to Alexandria and the coast instead.
Cairo is often the first stop of a longer journey: a few days for the Pyramids and the museums, then a domestic flight or a Nile cruise to Luxor and Aswan, or a few days on the Red Sea. If you continue by road to Ain Sokhna or Alexandria, a private transfer straight from the airport saves a night in the city.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get from Cairo Airport to the city centre?
Downtown Cairo and Zamalek are 22 km from CAI, usually 42–53 minutes by car. At peak hours it can take longer, and late at night it is often quicker.
Can I go from Cairo Airport directly to a hotel near the Pyramids?
Yes. The Giza Pyramids area is 49 km away, typically 66–83 minutes, and the driver takes you straight to your hotel door. Many travellers prefer to stay there for early access to the plateau.
Does the price change if my flight is late or traffic is bad?
No. The total price is agreed before booking and stays the same for traffic and flight delays. Share your flight number so the driver can follow your arrival.
Can I book a transfer from CAI to Alexandria or Ain Sokhna?
Yes, both are common longer transfers. Alexandria is 237 km away and Ain Sokhna 143 km, so a private car or minivan takes you there directly without changing to a bus or train.
Are child seats available for Cairo airport transfers?
Child seats can be requested when you book. Give the age of each child so the local provider can bring a suitable seat.
