Zakopane and Białka Tatrzańska in Winter 2026/27
Winter 2026/27 in the Polish Tatras: skiing on Kasprowy Wierch and in Białka, thermal baths, Christmas and New Year in Zakopane, Zakopianka traffic and Kraków Airport transfers.
Winter in the Polish Tatras at a glance
Zakopane and Białka Tatrzańska are Poland's main winter destinations in the Tatra mountains, both about 2 hours by road from Kraków Airport (KRK). The season runs roughly from December to March: Białka's lifts usually open first thanks to snowmaking, while the high slopes of Kasprowy Wierch depend on natural snow and typically open later.
Zakopane is a lively mountain town with wooden highlander architecture, the busy Krupówki street and access to the high Tatras. Białka Tatrzańska, about 30 minutes away by car, is a village built around one of Poland's largest ski areas and a thermal pool complex. Many visitors stay in one and visit the other.
Where to ski
- Kasprowy Wierch, Zakopane
- A cable car climbs from Kuźnice to the summit at almost 2,000 m, with runs into the Gąsienicowa and Goryczkowa valleys. It lies inside Tatra National Park, where artificial snow is not allowed, so the season depends on snowfall. Last winter the first run opened in mid-January; no official 2026/27 start date has been announced yet. Better suited to confident skiers.
- Białka Tatrzańska
- Kotelnica Białczańska, Kaniówka and Bania together form a large, well-groomed area with many chairlifts, snowmaking and night skiing on some slopes. Most runs are easy to intermediate, which makes it popular with families and beginners. Ski passes for 2026/27 have been on sale online since late October 2026.
- Smaller slopes around Zakopane
- Gubałówka, Nosal and several local areas offer short runs for practice days and children, close to the town centre.
Thermal baths after a day outside
Geothermal water is a big part of a Tatra winter. Białka has its own thermal complex next to the slopes, and further pools are found in Bukowina Tatrzańska, Chochołów and Zakopane itself. Outdoor pools with mountain views are especially popular in the late afternoon, when skiers come down from the lifts.
Weekends and holiday weeks are crowded at all of them. If you want a quieter visit, go on a weekday morning or late in the evening, and check opening hours and any online ticket options before you go.
Christmas, New Year and the busy weeks
Christmas in the Tatras is a family festival. Christmas Eve on 24 December is the main evening, with a meatless supper, and many churches hold a midnight mass. Restaurants may close early that evening, so book dinner in advance or choose a hotel that serves a Christmas Eve meal. Horse-drawn sleigh rides (kulig) and highlander music are part of the season when there is snow.
New Year's Eve brings large crowds to Zakopane, and accommodation for the turn of the year is often booked months ahead. Polish school holidays also matter: the Christmas break runs from 23 to 31 December 2026, and the winter school holidays (ferie) are staggered across regions from 18 January to 28 February 2027, with Małopolska, the region around Kraków and Zakopane, on holiday from 15 to 28 February. These are the busiest weeks on the slopes and the roads.
The Zakopianka road and getting there from Kraków Airport
Both Zakopane and Białka are about 2 hours from Kraków Airport. The main route, known as the Zakopianka, runs south from Kraków on an expressway for much of the way, then continues on a slower single-carriageway road towards Nowy Targ and Zakopane; Białka is reached via smaller roads east of Nowy Targ.
Traffic is the main variable. On Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings heading south, and on Sunday afternoons heading north, queues on the Zakopianka can add a lot of time, and fresh snow slows the last mountain section further. Winter tyres are strongly advised and standard for drivers in the mountains.
A private transfer booked with HotelTaxi takes you directly from the arrivals area to your door, which helps with ski bags, children and late arrivals. Declare skis or snowboards when booking so the right vehicle is sent. For the return, leave at least 4 hours before your flight on weekdays, and more on weekends and holiday changeover days.
Checklist for a Tatra winter trip

Frequently asked questions
When does skiing start on Kasprowy Wierch in 2026/27?
No official date had been announced at the time of writing. Because artificial snow is not allowed in the national park, the season depends on snowfall; last winter it began in mid-January. Check the cable car operator's announcements.
Is Białka Tatrzańska good for beginners?
Yes. Most runs are easy to intermediate, there are ski schools and slopes are groomed and partly lit for evening skiing.
How long is the drive from Kraków Airport to Zakopane?
About 2 hours in normal traffic. On weekends and holiday changeover days queues on the Zakopianka can make it much longer.
Should I stay in Zakopane or Białka?
Stay in Zakopane for town life, restaurants and mountain walks; stay in Białka if you want to ski straight from your accommodation and be close to the thermal pools.
