Sri Lanka South Coast Season 2026/27: Beaches, Whales, Culture
The south-west coast of Sri Lanka is at its best from December to April. Compare Bentota, Hikkaduwa, Galle, Weligama and Mirissa, and plan a trip with Kandy and Sigiriya.
When the south-west coast is in season
Sri Lanka’s south-west coast, from Bentota to Mirissa, is usually at its best from December to April, when the south-west monsoon is long gone and the sea calms down. All the beach towns in this guide are reached from Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) at Katunayake, north of Colombo, in about 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes.
Expect hot, humid days with highs typically around 30 °C and warm sea for swimming. Short showers still happen, especially in December, but the long sunny spells and calmer water make this the main beach and whale-watching season. Late December and early January are the busiest weeks, so book hotels and transfers early for that period.
Which beach town suits you
- Bentota (about 1 h 30 min)
- Wide beaches, a river lagoon and many established resorts. Good for families and a first or last stop close to the airport. River safaris and water sports are easy to arrange.
- Hikkaduwa (about 1 h 45 min)
- A livelier town with a coral reef close to the shore, turtles near the beach, surf breaks and plenty of small guesthouses and cafés.
- Galle and Unawatuna (about 2 h)
- Galle Fort is a UNESCO-listed walled town with boutique hotels, shops and ramparts for sunset walks. Unawatuna, just to the south, has a sheltered bay that is good for swimming.
- Weligama (about 2 h 15 min)
- A long sandy bay with gentle waves, one of the most popular places on the island to learn to surf.
- Mirissa (about 2 h 30 min)
- A small beach town and the main base for whale-watching trips, with cafés and guesthouses along a curved bay.
Whale watching from Mirissa
Whale-watching boats from Mirissa run in the calm season, roughly November to April, with December to March generally considered the most reliable months. Blue whales feed in deep water off the south coast, so trips go well offshore and usually last several hours, leaving early in the morning when the sea is calmest.
Sightings are never guaranteed. Choose an operator that keeps a respectful distance from the animals and does not crowd them with other boats. Take a hat, sun cream, water and something for seasickness if you are prone to it. Around Christmas and New Year the better boats can be booked out several days ahead.
Combining the coast with Kandy and Sigiriya
Many travellers combine a week on the beach with the hill country and the cultural triangle. Kandy, with the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, is about 3 hours from the airport, and Sigiriya about 4 hours. A common route is to go inland first, on arrival, and finish with a relaxing beach stay before the flight home.
When visiting temples, cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes and hats, and do not pose with your back to a Buddha statue. The central and northern areas can still see showers in December as the north-east monsoon fades.
Long drives on Sri Lankan roads take patience, with busy towns, buses and tuk-tuks. HotelTaxi arranges private transfers from Colombo airport with local transfer companies, and the same driver can take you between regions; vans are available for families and groups with lots of luggage or surfboards.
Practical checklist
- Entry rules
- Check the current visa and entry requirements for your nationality before you fly.
- Clothes for two settings
- Light beachwear, plus long trousers or a skirt and a scarf for temples.
- Surfboards and luggage
- Declare surfboards and extra bags when booking so a suitable vehicle is sent.
- Return to the airport
- From Mirissa or Weligama, leave about five and a half hours before departure; from Bentota, about four and a half hours.
