Cyprus in Winter 2026/27: Christmas, Epiphany, Coast or Troodos
Planning Cyprus between December and February? How Christmas and Epiphany are celebrated, where to stay on the coast or in Troodos, skiing, weather and getting there from Larnaca Airport.
What is Cyprus like between December and February?
Cyprus in winter means Christmas on 25 December, New Year in the towns and Epiphany on 6 January, when crosses are thrown into the sea at Larnaca and Limassol. Most visitors fly into Larnaca Airport (LCA) and choose between a mild coast and the Troodos mountains, where snow sometimes falls.
Larnaca, Limassol and Paphos are working towns, so restaurants and shops stay open all year; the festive season simply centres on church, food and family.
On the coast, daytime highs are often in the high teens °C, with sunny spells and rain showers, especially in December and January. Evenings are cool, so pack a warm layer.
How are Christmas, New Year and Epiphany celebrated in Cyprus?
The Church of Cyprus follows the Gregorian calendar, so Christmas falls on 25 December. Town centres put up Christmas lights and municipalities usually run festive events through December. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day belong to families, so book ahead if a particular dinner matters to you. New Year's Eve is celebrated in town centres and hotels.
Epiphany, known as Fota or Theophania, is a public holiday on 6 January. After the morning liturgy a procession walks to the sea, a priest throws a cross into the water and young men dive in to retrieve it. In Larnaca this follows the service at the Church of Saint Lazarus, on the seafront near the marina. In Limassol the ceremony is held at the old port. Programmes can change with the weather, so check the municipality's programme a few days before.
Where should you stay in Cyprus in winter?
In winter the towns usually make more sense than the resort strips. Larnaca is compact and close to the airport, with a seafront promenade and an old quarter around Saint Lazarus. Limassol has the busiest restaurant scene, and Paphos pairs a lively harbour with archaeological sites. Oroklini on Larnaca Bay suits a quieter seaside stay near LCA.
Ayia Napa and Protaras are built for summer beach holidays. Some beach hotels there close or run reduced services in deep winter, so check what is open before you book.
Troodos villages such as Platres offer mountain walks and frosty nights. Lefkara, with its stone lanes and lace tradition, is an easy half-day trip from Larnaca.
Can you ski in Cyprus?
Yes, but only when there is snow. The ski centre on Mount Olympus in the Troodos range is run by the Cyprus Ski Club and is small, with a few lifts. No opening date is fixed in advance: it depends entirely on snowfall. In 2025/26 the first slope opened only on 14 January 2026, and in a snowy winter the season usually runs from roughly early January to March.
Snow is not guaranteed, so treat skiing as a bonus rather than the reason for the trip, and follow the Cyprus Ski Federation's channels for current conditions.
How do you get from Larnaca Airport to the coast or the mountains?
From Larnaca Airport (LCA), Oroklini is about 23 km (19–24 minutes), Lefkara 41 km (34–43 minutes), Ayia Napa 60 km (42–53 minutes), Protaras 68 km (51–64 minutes) and Nicosia 54 km (55–69 minutes). Limassol is 70 km (59–74 minutes), Pissouri 103 km (68–85 minutes), Platres in Troodos 104 km (86–108 minutes) and Paphos 135 km (92–115 minutes). The coast is reached by motorway, while the last stretch to Platres climbs winding mountain roads that can have frost or snow.
If you land in the evening with skis and are heading for Troodos, a driver who knows the winter mountain road helps. HotelTaxi can arrange a private transfer with a local provider, booked online or on WhatsApp; declare ski equipment when booking so a suitable vehicle is sent.
