Protaras is the calmer, family-leaning resort on the east coast and part of Paralimni municipality. Its hotels line a long strip above Fig Tree Bay and the smaller coves to the north and south, so where you stay affects the last few minutes.

Why does Protaras take a little longer than Ayia Napa?

The first forty minutes or so follow the A3 east from the airport. The motorway ends near Ayia Napa, and from there it is ordinary roads, either through the edge of Paralimni or round past Cape Greco depending on your hotel.

Protaras is also long and thin. A hotel at the Pernera end in the north is a different drop-off from one close to the Cape Greco headland, which is why the range runs to just over an hour.

Protaras in brief for first-time visitors

Fig Tree Bay
The best-known beach, with a small island offshore and calm, clear water. Hotels and apartments climb the slope behind it.
The main avenue
Restaurants, shops and evening strolls along the road parallel to the sea. Livelier than the coves, but far calmer than central Ayia Napa.
Pernera
The northern end, with rocky inlets and smaller beaches. Popular with couples and returning visitors who like a quieter base.
Towards Cape Greco
The southern side, near sea caves, Konnos Bay and the walking trails of the national forest park.

Travelling with children, buggies and beach kit

Families make up a large share of Protaras visitors, and the luggage tends to show it. A minivan gives room for cases, a pushchair and a bag of snorkels without anyone holding things on their lap.

Child seats are available on request, so list the ages of your children when you book. In July and August the air on arrival can be very warm even late in the evening, and a cooled vehicle waiting at the terminal makes the first hour easier.

Through HotelTaxi you can book this ride with a local provider, either on the website or by sending a WhatsApp message.

Planning your return to LCA from Protaras

  1. Work back from departure

Aim to leave your hotel about three hours and fifteen minutes before take-off for a standard flight.

  2. Check the hotel's checkout time

If checkout is much earlier than your pickup, many hotels can store luggage while you spend a last morning on the beach.

  3. Confirm the pickup point

For apartments with no reception, agree a clear spot by the road with the provider the day before.
