Vlorë is a port city on a wide bay in southern Albania, with a long seafront promenade, beaches to the south and the coast road towards the Riviera beginning just beyond the city. It is a common first stop for travellers heading to the south of the country, and a private transfer saves changing buses in Tirana or Durrës.
What to expect on the road to Vlorë
From Rinas the driver follows the motorway west and then heads south along the main north–south route through the coastal plain, passing Rrogozhinë, Lushnjë and Fier. After Fier, a newer road leads south-west to Vlorë.
Most of the way is on wide roads through farmland, with towns and roadside businesses along the route. Summer weekend traffic can slow the stretches near towns, so the upper end of the time range is realistic in July and August. Short comfort stops can be arranged with the driver.
Where to stay in and around Vlorë
- Lungomare promenade
- The pedestrian-friendly seafront is lined with hotels, cafés and restaurants. The driver stops at the nearest point the car can reach.
- Beaches south of the city
- Hotels continue along the bay towards Uji i Ftohtë and Radhimë, quieter than the centre and close to small coves.
- Towards Orikum
- Further south on the bay, Orikum has a marina and a growing number of apartments. Ask for this address if your accommodation is there, as it adds driving time.
Luggage and longer trips
Vlorë is often the base for a longer holiday in the south, so travellers carry more luggage than on a city break. If you bring diving gear, paddleboards or bicycles, declare them when booking so a suitable vehicle is sent.
After a two-and-a-half-hour drive, children may need a break. Child seats can be requested in advance.
