Bulgaria’s second city is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe, and many visitors fly into Sofia and head straight there. The transfer is almost entirely motorway, which makes it one of the more predictable drives from the airport in any season.
The motorway drive east
The airport sits on the eastern side of Sofia, close to the start of the A1 Trakia motorway. From there the road runs south-east across the Thracian plain, past Pazardzhik, with the Rhodopes on the right and the Sredna Gora hills on the left.
There are no mountain passes on this route, so winter delays are less common than on the ski transfers. Heavier traffic comes on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings, and around the entry into Plovdiv itself.
Where you stay in Plovdiv makes a difference
The Old Town spreads over hills of cobbled streets with Revival-era houses, the Roman theatre and small guesthouses. Most of it is closed to ordinary traffic, and the final approach to many guesthouses is a steep cobbled lane. The driver stops at the nearest street a car may use, so travel with luggage you can carry a short distance uphill.
Kapana, the creative quarter of narrow lanes, bars and galleries, is pedestrian, as is the long main shopping street with the Roman stadium below it. Hotels on their edges, and the larger hotels in the modern centre, are usually easy to reach directly.
Who takes this transfer
- City-break visitors
- Couples and friends on a few days of Roman sites, galleries and wine bars. A standard car is usually enough.
- Business travellers
- Plovdiv has a large trade fair ground and an industrial zone on its outskirts. Give the exact company or venue address for the drop-off.
- Families and groups
- Request child seats in advance. Groups of four or more with suitcases usually fit better in a minivan.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Plovdiv from Sofia Airport?
It is 149 km, and the drive typically takes 98–123 minutes, almost all of it on the Trakia motorway.
How much is a taxi-style private transfer from Sofia Airport to Plovdiv?
A private car for up to three people usually costs around €95–120, and a minivan around €130–170. You see the exact total before booking, and it does not change with traffic.
Can the driver reach my guesthouse in the Old Town?
Often not to the door, because most of the Old Town is restricted to residents and service vehicles. The driver drops you at the closest street open to cars, and your host can usually tell you which one.
Is the road to Plovdiv affected by snow?
Much less than the mountain routes. The motorway crosses lowland, though heavy snowfall or fog on the plain can still slow traffic for a day.
Can I stop somewhere on the way?
A short comfort stop can be agreed with the driver. Longer sightseeing detours are not part of a standard transfer, so mention any plans when booking.
