Transfers from this airport

From Sofia Airport to the Bulgarian ski resorts

Sofia Airport sits on the eastern side of the capital, so mountain transfers leave the city without crossing the centre. From December to March, much of the arrivals traffic is skiers, many of them on weekend charter and low-cost flights from the UK, Ireland, Israel, Romania and Poland.

A local transfer company collects you in the arrivals area with a name sign. The exact meeting point depends on the terminal and is agreed with you by phone or WhatsApp. Share your flight number when booking so the driver can follow a delay.

Bansko or Borovets: two very different drives

Borovets — the short transfer
About 75 km and typically 76–95 minutes. The road climbs south-east from Sofia past the Iskar reservoir and through the town of Samokov to Borovets on the northern slopes of Rila. A car usually costs around €50–70, a minivan around €75–100.
Bansko — the long transfer south
About 175 km and typically 125–157 minutes. Most of the way follows the Struma motorway south, followed by a mountain road over the pass between Rila and Pirin into the Razlog valley. A car usually costs around €110–140, a minivan around €150–200.

What each resort is like

Borovets is Bulgaria’s oldest mountain resort. Its hotels are grouped fairly tightly around the base area and the lifts, below Musala, the highest peak in the Balkans. It suits skiers who want a short transfer and to be on the snow quickly after landing.

Bansko is a historic town at the foot of the Pirin mountains, with cobbled old streets, traditional taverns and a gondola that starts at the edge of town. Accommodation is spread across the town, from large apartment hotels near the gondola to small guesthouses in the old quarter. It is larger and livelier, and the drive is roughly twice as long.

Winter roads and choosing a vehicle

Both routes end in mountain roads that can carry snow and ice between December and March. Local providers drive these roads all season and use winter tyres, with snow chains carried when conditions call for them. In heavy snowfall the drive can take longer than the typical time shown, but the agreed price does not change.

Skis and snowboard bags take more space than suitcases. Declare all equipment when booking: two skiers with board bags often fit a car, but four people with skis and suitcases usually need a minivan. Larger groups can request bigger vehicles, and child seats can be added to the booking.

Getting back to Sofia for your flight

Plan your return from the drive time plus at least two hours at the airport, and add a winter margin. From Borovets, a pickup about 3.5 hours before departure works in normal conditions. From Bansko, allow about 5 hours before departure, more if snow is forecast. The ride is private, so there are no stops at other hotels on the way.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Bansko from Sofia Airport?

Bansko is about 175 km from Sofia Airport, typically a drive of 125–157 minutes. In snow the mountain section can take longer. A private car usually costs around €110–140; the exact price is shown before booking.

Which resort is closer to Sofia Airport, Bansko or Borovets?

Borovets is much closer, at about 75 km and typically 76–95 minutes. Bansko is about 175 km away. If a short transfer matters most, for example with small children or a late arrival, Borovets is the easier choice.

Can I bring skis and snowboards in the transfer?

Yes. Declare the number of ski or board bags when booking so the provider sends a vehicle with enough space. Groups with equipment often need a minivan even when the passenger count would fit a car.

What happens if my flight to Sofia is delayed?

Share your flight number when booking so the driver can follow your arrival time. The total price is agreed in advance and does not change because of a delayed flight.

Do the cars have winter tyres?

Local providers run winter-equipped vehicles in the ski season and carry snow chains when conditions require them. Allow extra time on snowy days, as mountain roads may be slower.

Can you take me from the airport to a hotel in Sofia?

No. HotelTaxi does not offer rides within Sofia. The transfers on this page run from Sofia Airport to the ski resorts of Bansko and Borovets.
