The airport sits far out in Arnavutköy, close to the Black Sea, while the Old City is at the southern tip of the historic peninsula. This is the longest of the common European-side hotel runs from IST, and the last few kilometres through the old quarter are the slowest.
What does the drive from IST to the Old City look like?
The first part leaves the airport on its own fast access roads, the D020 and the Northern Marmara Motorway (O-7) network, through open, partly wooded land north of the city. The driver then joins the TEM motorway or one of the large arterial roads heading south and enters the dense city on the European side.
The final stretch crosses the historic peninsula, often along the old city walls or the Golden Horn, before turning into Sultanahmet.
Staying in Sultanahmet
Most visitors choose Sultanahmet to be within walking distance of Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace and the Grand Bazaar. Hotels are mostly small and mid-sized, many in restored wooden or stone houses on steep, narrow lanes that slope down towards the Sea of Marmara.
The squares around the main monuments are largely for pedestrians, and several hotel streets are one-way or very tight. Your driver stops as close to the entrance as a car is allowed and able to go; in a few lanes the last short walk is on foot, and hotel staff often help with bags.
Who books this route
- First-time city visitors
- Travellers on a short culture break who want to drop their bags and start walking to the monuments.
- Families
- A minivan takes up to about seven people with suitcases, and child seats can be requested when booking.
- Late arrivals
- Many long-haul and Gulf connections land in the evening or at night. A driver waiting with a name sign avoids finding transport at that hour.
Returning to Istanbul Airport from Sultanahmet
IST is a very large airport with long walks between check-in, passport control and the gates. For an international flight, a safe rule is to be collected about 4.5 hours before departure, which covers the drive of up to 85 minutes plus roughly three hours at the airport. On weekday mornings and late afternoons add another 30 minutes.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take from Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet by car?
Usually 68–85 minutes for the 59 km. Heavy traffic on the way into the historic peninsula can make it longer at peak times.
Is Istanbul Airport or Sabiha Gökçen closer to the Old City?
The two airports are on opposite sides of the Bosphorus. IST is on the European side, so no strait crossing is needed to reach Sultanahmet, but the drive from the far north-west is long.
Can the car stop directly at my hotel?
Wherever the street is open to cars, yes. Around the monuments some areas are pedestrian or very narrow, so the driver stops at the nearest permitted point.
Does the price change if my flight is late?
No. The price agreed at booking stays the same, and sharing your flight number lets the local provider follow the arrival time.
Is there room for large suitcases in a standard car?
A standard car suits up to three passengers with normal luggage. For several large cases or a pushchair, a minivan is the better choice.
