Amed is a string of fishing villages on Bali's north-east coast in Karangasem, popular with divers, snorkellers and freedivers. It is one of the longest transfers on the island, so planning helps.

What is the drive to Amed like?

After leaving south Bali, the route usually follows the coast road east past Klungkung and Candidasa to Amlapura, then turns north towards Culik and down to the sea. You pass rice fields, palm groves and, on clear days, views of Mount Agung.

The road is two-lane most of the way, with villages, trucks and occasional ceremonies slowing traffic. Count on three hours or more, with a longer trip in evening traffic and in the peak months.

The Amed coast, bay by bay

Amed and Jemeluk
The first bays, with the popular Jemeluk snorkelling and dive spots and many dive centres.
Bunutan and Lipah
Small resorts and guesthouses along the hilly coast road, with quiet beaches.
Selang and Aas
Further east and more remote, with fewer places to stay and a winding road.

Bringing dive equipment

If you bring your own dive or freediving gear, declare it when booking so the provider sends a vehicle with enough space. A minivan for up to about seven usually costs around €65–85.

The USAT Liberty wreck at Tulamben is further north up the coast; if you stay there, give that address instead.

Planning the return to the airport

With up to about three and a half hours on the road and a buffer for south Bali traffic, leave Amed around seven hours before an international departure. For a morning flight, a last night in south Bali is usually more practical than a pre-dawn start.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the Amed transfer take more than three hours?

The 97 km route crosses south Bali traffic and then follows two-lane roads through towns and villages. There is no motorway to the east of the island.

Can the driver take us to a guesthouse in Aas or Selang?

Yes. Give your exact accommodation name and location when booking, as the coast road beyond Amed is long and winding.

Is it better to break the trip in Sidemen?

Some travellers spend a few nights in Sidemen before continuing to Amed. You can book two separate transfers if you plan a split stay.

Is an evening arrival a problem for Amed?

Late arrivals are fine, but the trip will be long. Let your guesthouse know your expected arrival time, as some small places have no night reception.

How much is a transfer from Bali Airport to Amed?

A car for up to three passengers usually costs around €45–60, and a minivan around €65–85. The exact price is shown before you book.
