This is the far end of Dubai as seen from Abu Dhabi. The car crosses almost the entire length of the city before reaching the old districts on Dubai Creek, which lie close to Dubai International Airport.
Crossing all of Dubai to reach the Creek
After the long coastal motorway past Ghantoot and Jebel Ali, the car continues along Sheikh Zayed Road through New Dubai, past Downtown and the World Trade Centre area, before turning towards the Creek. Every central district lies on the way, so traffic in the city adds more time here than on any other Dubai route from AUH.
For Deira, on the far bank of the Creek, the car crosses one of the bridges or the tunnel. Which crossing the driver uses depends on traffic at that hour.
At night and early in the morning the city is much quieter and the ride stays close to 91 minutes. On weekday evenings, when much of Dubai is on Sheikh Zayed Road, expect the upper end of 114 minutes or a little more.
Staying in old Dubai
Bur Dubai has the Al Fahidi historic quarter, the textile souk and the abra landings. Deira, opposite, is known for the gold and spice souks and its busy commercial streets. Hotels range from compact city properties to larger Creek-side buildings.
Streets are dense and parking in front of some hotels is tight. In the lanes near the souks the car may stop at the nearest accessible point, and the hotel staff can usually help with bags for the last few metres.
Who takes this route
- Family visits
- Many travellers from India and other countries visit relatives in Bur Dubai, Karama or Deira and arrive with heavy luggage. A minivan avoids squeezing suitcases into a car.
- Traders and business travellers
- Deira's markets draw buyers who sometimes fly into Abu Dhabi for the connection. Leave room in the vehicle for samples or purchases on the way back.
- Culture-focused visitors
- Travellers who want the souks and the Creek can stay in the old town and still use AUH with a direct private ride.
