Zanzibar High Season 2026/27: North or East Coast?
Zanzibar from December to February: hot, mostly dry and busy. How Nungwi and Kendwa differ from Paje and Jambiani, tides, kitesurfing, Stone Town and festival dates.
Why December to February is Zanzibar’s high season
Zanzibar’s main high season runs from mid-December to the end of February, between the short rains of November and the long rains that usually start in March. Expect hot, humid days, mostly dry weather, warm sea water and the year’s busiest beaches, with Christmas and New Year as the absolute peak.
The island is small, but the coast you choose shapes your whole holiday. The north and the east coast feel very different, mainly because of the tides.
North or east coast: the key differences
- Nungwi and Kendwa (north)
- The tide matters much less here, so you can usually swim at any time of day. Beaches face west for sunsets, and there are more restaurants and boat trips. Best for travellers who want easy swimming every day.
- Paje and Jambiani (south-east)
- Wide white beaches and shallow lagoons. At low tide the sea retreats far out, revealing seaweed farms and sandbanks. Paje is a kitesurfing hub; Jambiani is a quieter village strip.
- Matemwe and Kiwengwa (north-east)
- Matemwe is calm and close to Mnemba Atoll for snorkelling trips. Kiwengwa has many larger all-inclusive resorts. Both have noticeable tides.
- Michamvi (south-east peninsula)
- A narrow peninsula with the ocean on one side and Chwaka Bay on the other, so you can watch the sunset over the water. Quiet and secluded.
Tides and kitesurfing on the east coast
On the east coast the difference between high and low tide is large. At low tide you may walk a long way before the water is deep enough to swim; at high tide the lagoon fills and swimming is easy. Check a tide table for your dates and plan beach time around the high-water hours.
December to February is also kitesurfing season. The steady north-east trade wind blows across the lagoons of Paje, Jambiani and Michamvi, and the shallow, flat water inside the reef suits lessons and beginners. If you bring your own kite equipment, declare it when you book your transfer so a suitable vehicle is sent.
Stone Town and the Sauti za Busara festival
Stone Town, the old quarter of Zanzibar City and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is worth at least a night or a full day: carved doors, narrow lanes, markets and the evening food stalls at Forodhani Gardens on the waterfront. Cars cannot enter most of the lanes, so drivers stop at the nearest accessible point and hotel staff often help with luggage.
Sauti za Busara, the island’s well-known African music festival, traditionally takes place in February. Its 2027 edition has moved: the organisers list it for 19–21 March 2027 in Stone Town, so it falls just after the main high season. Check the festival’s official announcements before planning around it.
Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim. Ramadan is expected to begin around 8 February 2027, depending on the moon sighting. Resorts operate normally, but in Stone Town and the villages please dress modestly, and during Ramadan avoid eating, drinking or smoking in public in daytime.
Getting from Zanzibar Airport to your hotel
Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) lies just outside Zanzibar City. Typical drive times are about 15 minutes to Stone Town, 55 minutes to Kiwengwa, 1 hour to Paje and Matemwe, 1 hour 10 minutes to Jambiani and Kendwa, and 1 hour 15 minutes to Nungwi and Michamvi.
Roads cross the island through villages and small towns, with speed limits and police checks, so do not expect motorway speed. In high season, a private transfer booked in advance, for example through HotelTaxi, means the driver is waiting in arrivals with a name sign and you go straight to your hotel without negotiating at the kerb.
