Christmas and New Year in Tenerife 2026/27: South or North?
Christmas and New Year in Tenerife: south versus north, winter weather, Spanish festive traditions and the Three Kings parade on 5 January 2027, with drive times from TFS.
Why Tenerife for the festive season
Tenerife is one of the warmest places in Europe over Christmas and New Year, with mild sunshine on the south coast and Spanish festive traditions that run from late December to 6 January. Most holiday resorts are close to Tenerife South Airport (TFS): Los Cristianos is about 15 minutes away, Costa Adeje and Playa de las Américas about 20 minutes.
In the south, daytime highs in December and January are usually around the low 20s °C, and rain is infrequent. Evenings are cooler, so a light jacket is useful for dinner outside. The Atlantic is typically around 19–21 °C, which many people find fine for a swim on a sunny afternoon.
South or north?
- Costa Adeje and Playa de las Américas
- About 20 minutes from TFS. Large hotels, beaches, promenades and plenty of restaurants open over the holidays. The most reliable sunshine on the island and the busiest choice at New Year.
- Los Cristianos
- About 15 minutes from the airport. A former fishing town with a harbour, a calm town beach and a mix of hotels and apartments. Good for families and for travellers who want to walk everywhere.
- Los Gigantes
- About 40 minutes from TFS on the west coast, beneath the high cliffs that give it its name. Quieter, with a small marina and boat trips along the coast. Good for couples and longer stays.
- Puerto de la Cruz
- About 1 hour 15 minutes from TFS on the north coast. Greener and more traditionally Canarian, with a historic centre and local festive life. Expect more cloud and occasional showers than in the south, and slightly cooler evenings.
Christmas and New Year traditions
In Spain, the main Christmas celebration is Christmas Eve, Nochebuena, with a family dinner and often midnight mass. Towns set up nativity scenes, belenes, and La Laguna and Santa Cruz are known for their displays and Christmas lights. Many shops and offices close on 25 December and 1 January, but restaurants in the resorts stay open.
On New Year’s Eve, the custom is to eat twelve grapes, one for each chime of the clock at midnight. Squares and hotels hold parties, and fireworks are common along the southern coast. Hotel gala dinners on 24 and 31 December are often booked well in advance and sometimes compulsory, so check the conditions.
The festive season ends with the Three Kings. In Santa Cruz de Tenerife the Cabalgata de Reyes, the Three Kings parade, usually takes place on the evening of 5 January, which in 2027 is a Tuesday. Many other towns hold their own parades, and 6 January is a public holiday when children open presents. The detailed 2027 programme is normally published by the city council in late December.
Arriving and getting around
The weeks from just before Christmas to the first week of January are the busiest at Tenerife South, with many arrivals on weekends. Book your transfer together with your hotel, especially if you land in the evening or travel with children who need car seats.
The drive to the southern resorts is short and runs mainly along the TF-1 motorway. Puerto de la Cruz takes about 1 hour 15 minutes and crosses the island past Santa Cruz, which can be busy on parade days and during the festive shopping weeks. HotelTaxi arranges private transfers from Tenerife South Airport with local transfer companies, at a price agreed before you travel.

Frequently asked questions
Is it warm enough for the beach in Tenerife at Christmas?
In the south, most days are warm and sunny enough for the beach, with highs usually around the low 20s °C. The sea is cooler than in summer, and evenings call for a light jacket.
When is the Three Kings parade in Tenerife?
The Cabalgata de Reyes in Santa Cruz de Tenerife usually takes place on the evening of 5 January, which is Tuesday 5 January 2027. Check the city council’s programme in late December for times and route.
Should I stay in the north or the south of Tenerife in winter?
Choose the south for sunshine and beaches close to the airport. The north, around Puerto de la Cruz, is greener and more traditional, but cloudier and about 1 hour 15 minutes from Tenerife South.
