Tenerife South, officially Tenerife Sur – Reina Sofía, sits on the island's dry southern coast close to the TF-1 motorway. Most of the big holiday resorts are less than half an hour away, which makes it the main arrival point for winter-sun travellers from October to April.

Transfers from this airport

Arriving at Tenerife South

Tenerife South handles most of the holiday flights to the island, many of them from the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland, Italy and Poland. Flights from the UK and Ireland arrive from outside the Schengen area, so expect a passport check before baggage reclaim.

Once you have your luggage, your driver meets you at the meeting point in the arrivals area with a name sign. The exact place is confirmed by the local provider by phone or WhatsApp before you land or as you arrive. Sharing your flight number when you book lets the provider follow your arrival time.

The Canary Islands keep the same clock as the UK and Ireland, one hour behind mainland Spain. Keep this in mind when you check your onward plans on arrival.

Where do transfers from Tenerife South Airport go?

Costa Adeje
18 km, about 16–20 minutes along the TF-1. Large resort hotels, family complexes and beach promenades on the island's south-west coast.
Playa de las Américas
18 km, about 17–22 minutes. The busy heart of the south, with beaches, surf spots, restaurants and nightlife along the seafront.
Los Cristianos
17 km, about 16–20 minutes. A former fishing town with a sheltered beach, a long promenade and the ferry port for La Gomera.
Los Gigantes
44 km, about 38–48 minutes. A quieter west-coast village below sheer cliffs, with a small marina and boat trips along the coast.
Puerto de la Cruz
90 km, about 61–77 minutes. The traditional resort of the green north coast, crossing almost the whole island by motorway.

How long are the drives from the airport?

Tenerife South is unusually close to its resorts. Los Cristianos, Playa de las Américas and Costa Adeje are all reached in around 16–22 minutes on the TF-1 motorway, so you can be at your hotel within an hour of landing on most days.

The west coast takes longer. Los Gigantes is about 38–48 minutes away, as the last part follows a smaller coastal road through Playa San Juan and Puerto de Santiago. Puerto de la Cruz on the north coast is the longest regular transfer at about 61–77 minutes, using the motorway past Santa Cruz and La Laguna.

Choosing the right vehicle

Private car
Suitable for 1–3 passengers with normal luggage. The usual choice for couples and small families heading to the southern resorts.
Minivan
For families and groups of up to about seven, or smaller parties with a lot of luggage. Child seats can be requested when you book.
Larger vehicles
Available on request for bigger groups. Declare golf bags, bicycles, surfboards or diving gear when booking so a vehicle with enough space is sent.

Winter sun season in the south of Tenerife

The south of the island is dry and sunny for much of the year, which is why demand peaks between October and April. Christmas, New Year, Carnival and the school holidays in the main source countries are the busiest arrival periods, so booking your transfer early is sensible then.

Many visitors come for the beaches, but the island also draws golfers to the courses around the south, cyclists training on the volcanic climbs, divers and whale-watching trips from the southern harbours. If you travel with equipment, mention it when booking.
