Marrakech in Winter: Agafay Nights, Atlas Snow and Essaouira

Marrakech from December to February means sunny days, cold desert nights in Agafay, snow on the High Atlas around Imlil and festive riads. How to plan it.

What is Marrakech like from December to February?

Marrakech in winter, from December to February, offers bright, mild days and cold nights, with snow often visible on the High Atlas just south of the city. It is a good season for the medina, the Agafay desert and mountain villages such as Imlil, as long as you pack for the evenings.

Daytime temperatures in the city are usually comfortable for walking, often in the high teens °C on sunny days. After sunset the temperature drops quickly, and many traditional riads have limited heating, so a warm layer and good socks make a difference. Rain is possible but most days are dry.

The Christmas and New Year weeks are the busiest part of the winter, while January and early February are calmer. In 2027 Ramadan is expected to begin around 8 February, subject to the official moon sighting, which changes the daily rhythm in the second half of February.

Agafay in winter: clear skies and cold nights

The Agafay is a stony desert plateau south-west of Marrakech, about 40 minutes from Marrakech Airport by private transfer. Its tented camps are popular for a night or two of quiet, sunsets over the hills and dinner under the stars.

In winter the sky is often very clear, but nights in the camps are cold and can approach freezing. Ask your camp whether tents are heated and whether extra blankets are provided, and bring a warm jacket, hat and closed shoes. Days are pleasant for walks, camel rides or quad tours.

The last stretch to some camps is on unpaved tracks. Tell the transfer provider the exact camp name when booking; some camps meet guests at a fixed point and continue with their own vehicles.

Snow on the High Atlas and Imlil

Imlil is a mountain village at the foot of Jebel Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak, about 1 hour 30 minutes from Marrakech Airport. The road leaves the plain, passes Asni and climbs into the valley; the last part is a narrow mountain road with bends. In winter, snow can reach the village itself and the higher trails.

Imlil suits travellers who want a night or two in a mountain guesthouse, easy valley walks with a local guide or, for experienced and properly equipped hikers, winter routes higher up. Winter ascents of Toubkal need crampons, mountain experience and a qualified guide.

Cars stop in the village; some guesthouses are higher up and luggage may be carried the last part on foot or by mule. Pack light in a soft bag. After heavy snow, roads can be slow or temporarily closed, so keep your schedule flexible and avoid planning the mountain trip for the day before your flight.

Essaouira: day trip or a few nights?

Essaouira is a walled port town on the Atlantic, about 2 hours 45 minutes from Marrakech Airport by road across the plains and argan country. It is cooler and breezier than Marrakech, with a relaxed medina, a fishing harbour and a long beach used by kitesurfers and windsurfers.

A day trip from Marrakech is possible but means more than five hours in the car. Two or three nights let you enjoy the town at a slower pace. Many travellers combine both cities: fly into Marrakech, transfer straight to Essaouira, then return to Marrakech for the last nights before the flight home. If you bring surf or kite equipment, declare it when booking so a suitable vehicle is sent.

Christmas and New Year in a Marrakech riad

Christmas is not a public holiday in Morocco, but many riads and hotels serve festive dinners for guests, and New Year's Eve is one of the busiest nights of the year in the city. Rooms in well-located riads fill early for late December, so book well ahead.

Most riads lie in the medina, in lanes where cars cannot enter. Your driver will stop at the nearest accessible point, and riad staff or porters often help with luggage for the last part on foot. Share your riad's name and your flight number when booking. If you land late in the evening, a pre-arranged private transfer from Marrakech Airport means you are not looking for directions in dark lanes with your suitcases.
