Lanzarote in Winter 2026/27: Playa Blanca, Resorts and Volcanoes
Lanzarote in winter: mild sun, Papagayo beaches near Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen or Costa Teguise, César Manrique sites, Timanfaya and short airport drives.
What winter in Lanzarote is like
Lanzarote is a reliable winter-sun island in the Canaries, with daytime highs usually around 20–23 °C from November to March and little rain. The sea stays cool, typically around 18–20 °C, so most people swim briefly or use heated hotel pools.
The island is compact and almost everything is within an hour's drive. That makes Lanzarote good for a week that mixes beach days with short trips to volcanic landscapes and the architecture of César Manrique. Expect wind on many days, especially on the north and east coasts, and pack a jacket for evenings and higher ground.
Choosing your resort
- Playa Blanca
- In the far south, with a long seafront promenade, a marina and the sheltered Papagayo beaches nearby. Quieter than Puerto del Carmen and popular with couples and families. About 30 minutes from the airport.
- Puerto del Carmen
- The largest and liveliest resort, with a long beach strip, plenty of restaurants and an old harbour. Good if you want to walk everywhere. About 15 minutes from the airport.
- Costa Teguise
- North of Arrecife, with several small beaches, golf and a popular windsurf spot. Close to the Sunday market in Teguise. About 15 minutes from the airport.
Playa Blanca and the Papagayo beaches
The Papagayo beaches sit in a series of small coves east of Playa Blanca, inside the protected Los Ajaches natural area. The sand is golden, the water is calm on most days and the cliffs give some shelter from the wind, which makes them a favourite in winter.
You reach them on foot along the coastal path from Playa Blanca, by boat trip, or by car on an unpaved track; a small fee per vehicle is usually charged at the entrance. Facilities are limited, so take water and shade.
From Playa Blanca's harbour, ferries cross to Corralejo on Fuerteventura in well under an hour, a popular day trip.
César Manrique and Timanfaya
The artist and architect César Manrique shaped how Lanzarote looks: low white houses, no high-rise along most of the coast, and sites that blend into the lava. The best known are Jameos del Agua, built into a lava tube in the north, the Mirador del Río viewpoint over La Graciosa, the Jardín de Cactus near Guatiza and his former home, now the Fundación César Manrique, in Tahíche.
Timanfaya National Park covers the lava fields formed by eruptions in the 18th and 19th centuries. Visitors drive to the Islote de Hilario visitor area, where coach tours follow the volcano route through the park; you cannot drive that route in your own car. Arrive early in peak weeks, as queues build at the entrance.
The drives are short: from the southern resorts, Timanfaya is roughly half an hour away, and the northern Manrique sites take around 45 minutes to an hour.
Arriving at Lanzarote Airport
Lanzarote Airport (ACE) lies on the east coast between Arrecife and Puerto del Carmen. The drives are short: around 15 minutes to Puerto del Carmen or Costa Teguise, and around 30 minutes to Playa Blanca on the main road south across the island's volcanic plain.
Winter weekends and school holidays bring many arrivals at once. With a private transfer from HotelTaxi, the driver meets you in arrivals with a name sign and goes straight to your hotel or villa. This is useful for late flights, families who need a child seat, golfers and windsurfers with equipment, and villas in the south that are not on a resort coach route.
On the way home, leave Playa Blanca about two and a half hours before departure, and Puerto del Carmen or Costa Teguise about two hours before.
