Kraków Christmas Market 2026: Dates, Szopki and Getting There
Kraków's Christmas market fills the Main Market Square from 27 November 2026. Dates, the szopki contest, what to eat, where to stay and Tatra day trips.
When and where is the Kraków Christmas Market in 2026?
The Kraków Christmas Market opens on Friday 27 November 2026 on the Main Market Square (Rynek Główny), right in the medieval Old Town. It runs into the first days of January 2027; published end dates differ between 1 and 6 January, so check the organiser's announcement before you book a late-season trip.
The wooden stalls cluster around the Cloth Hall (Sukiennice) and the Town Hall Tower, below St Mary's Basilica. The square is at its best after dark, when the lights come on and the hourly bugle call (hejnał) sounds from the basilica tower.
What can you see and eat at the market?
Many stalls sell crafts: hand-painted glass baubles, wooden toys, amber jewellery, wool slippers from the mountains and straw tree ornaments. Some złoty cash helps for small purchases.
The food is the main reason locals come. Look for:
- oscypek, the smoked sheep's cheese from the Tatra foothills, grilled and served with cranberry jam
- pierogi with sauerkraut and mushrooms, or meat
- grilled kiełbasa and hearty soups such as żurek
- grzaniec, Polish mulled wine, and hot mead
- gingerbread (pierniki)
Dress warmly: December evenings are often around or below freezing, and standing on stone cobbles feels colder than the forecast.
What are Kraków's szopki and when is the contest?
Kraków szopki are not ordinary nativity scenes. They are tall, glittering models of the city's churches and towers, built from cardboard, tin foil and coloured paper, with the nativity set inside. The tradition is listed by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage.
The 84th Kraków Nativity Scene Contest takes place on Thursday 3 December 2026. From 10:00 the makers set out their szopki around the Adam Mickiewicz monument on the Main Market Square, and at noon they carry them in a procession around the square. Arrive by late morning to see them up close.
The entries then move to Krzysztofory Palace on the square, where the post-contest exhibition runs from 9 December 2026 to 28 February 2027.
Where should you stay for the Christmas market?
The Old Town puts you a few minutes' walk from the stalls, but much of it lies inside a restricted traffic zone around the Rynek. Cars cannot always reach the hotel door, so drivers stop at the nearest accessible point and you walk the last stretch with your luggage.
Kazimierz, the former Jewish quarter south of the centre, has good restaurants, quieter streets and easier vehicle access, about a 15–20 minute walk from the square. Podgórze across the river is also practical for families with prams or heavy cases. Book early for December weekends.
How do you get from Kraków Airport to the Old Town and the mountains?
Kraków Airport (KRK) at Balice is 14 km from the Old Town, a drive of about 32–40 minutes depending on traffic. Kraków also works well as a base for winter days out:
- **Wieliczka Salt Mine**: 29 km from the airport, about 51–64 minutes; underground chapels carved in salt
- **Zakopane**: 114 km, about 88–110 minutes; the Tatra town with wooden villas, Krupówki street and cable cars
- **Białka Tatrzańska**: 108 km, about 83–104 minutes; a ski area with thermal pools
Ski conditions depend on the season, so check the resorts before planning a ski day, and allow extra time on winter weekends and after snowfall.
HotelTaxi can arrange a private transfer with a local provider from Kraków Airport to your Old Town hotel, or onwards to Zakopane or Białka, booked online or in a WhatsApp chat. For a standard car to the Old Town, expect roughly €30–45; the exact price is shown before you book and does not change if your flight is late. Mention skis, snowboards or a pram when booking so the right vehicle comes.

Frequently asked questions
When does the Kraków Christmas Market 2026 open and close?
It opens on 27 November 2026 on the Main Market Square. Published closing dates vary between 1 and 6 January 2027, so confirm with the organiser before planning a visit in early January.
Is the market free to enter?
Yes. It is an open-air market on a public square, and you pay only for what you buy.
How long does it take to get from Kraków Airport to the Old Town?
The 14 km drive usually takes 32–40 minutes. Because of the restricted traffic zone, cars drop you at the nearest accessible point to your hotel.
Can I combine the market with skiing?
Yes. Białka Tatrzańska is about 83–104 minutes from the airport and Zakopane about 88–110 minutes, so a mountain day or a few nights in the Tatras fits well.
