Cape Verde Winter Sun 2026/27: Sal or Boa Vista?
Sal or Boa Vista for winter sun in Cape Verde: wind, beaches, resort areas, all-inclusive or independent, and how short the airport transfers really are.
Why Cape Verde works from November to April
Cape Verde is one of the closest reliable winter-sun destinations for Europeans: the islands of Sal and Boa Vista have dry, sunny weather through the northern winter, with daytime highs usually in the mid-20s °C. Flights from much of Europe take roughly five to six hours, and the time difference is small, so a week works without serious jet lag.
The catch is the wind. From roughly November to May the north-east trade winds blow steadily across both islands. That is why kitesurfers love them, and why a sheltered sun lounger matters more here than in the Canaries. Evenings can feel cool, so pack a light jumper.
Sal: Santa Maria, kitesurfing and salt pans
Most visitors to Sal stay in or around Santa Maria in the south of the island. The town has a pedestrian promenade, a wooden pier where fishermen land their catch in the morning, bars, small restaurants and a long beach lined with hotels. It is easy to explore on foot, which makes Sal a good choice if you want to eat out rather than stay in the hotel every night.
Sal is one of the best-known kitesurf and windsurf spots in the Atlantic. Kite Beach on the east side and Ponta Preta to the west attract experienced riders, while schools in Santa Maria teach beginners in calmer conditions.
Away from the beach, the salt pans at Pedra de Lume sit inside an old volcanic crater, and you can float in the very salty water. The natural rock pool at Buracona and the dunes of the interior make a good half-day trip by private car or excursion.
Boa Vista: big beaches, resorts and desert
Boa Vista is quieter and more spread out. Its appeal is the beaches: long, wide stretches of pale sand such as Praia de Chaves near Rabil and Praia de Santa Mónica on the south-west coast, often with very few people on them.
Most hotels are large resorts on the Chaves/Rabil coast or further south around Lacacão, with the small capital Sal Rei to the north. The resorts are some distance from each other and from the town, so evenings usually happen inside the hotel.
Inland, the Viana desert brings Saharan-style dunes close to the coast, and quad, jeep and 4x4 tours are popular. Later in the season, roughly from March, whale-watching trips look for humpback whales off the coast.
All-inclusive or independent?
- All-inclusive suits Boa Vista
- With resorts far apart and little nightlife outside the hotels, most Boa Vista visitors book all-inclusive. Plan excursions in advance rather than relying on walking into town.
- Independent suits Sal
- In Santa Maria you can book bed and breakfast or self-catering and walk to restaurants, the pier and the beach. Small apartments and guesthouses are common.
- Money and entry
- The local currency is the Cape Verdean escudo, which is pegged to the euro; cards work in larger hotels. Check the current pre-registration and entry rules for your passport before you fly.
Getting from the airport: short and simple
Both airports are close to the resort areas. From Sal Airport (SID), the drive south to Santa Maria takes about 20 minutes on a straight road across a flat, dry landscape. From Boa Vista Airport (BVC), the resorts on the Chaves, Rabil and Lacacão coast are about 25 minutes away, partly on smaller roads towards the southern hotels.
Because many winter flights arrive in clusters, the arrivals hall and the coach line can be busy. A private transfer with HotelTaxi means the driver waits in arrivals with a name sign and drives you straight to your hotel, without stops at other resorts. That helps with children, late arrivals and kitesurf bags; declare boards and kites when booking so the right vehicle is sent.
For your return, plan to leave the hotel at least two and a half to three hours before departure: the drive is short, but check-in queues for charter flights can be long.
