Bansko and Borovets Ski Season 2026/27: Dates and Transfers
Bulgarian ski season 2026/27: planned opening dates for Bansko and Borovets, which resort suits whom, winter road conditions and drive times from Sofia Airport.
When the 2026/27 season starts
Bulgaria's two best-known ski resorts, Bansko in the Pirin mountains and Borovets in the Rila mountains, are both reached from Sofia Airport (SOF). Bansko's operator has published a preliminary 2026/27 winter season from 1 December 2026 to 11 April 2027, and Borovets usually opens in mid to late December, depending on snow.
Both dates move with the weather. Bansko's operator states that it can change the start and end of the season depending on snow cover, and in past winters the lifts have opened both earlier and later than planned. Borovets had not published an official 2026/27 opening date at the time of writing; its season usually runs from mid-December to early April, and last winter the official opening was on 27 December. Check the resort's own channels in the days before you travel, especially for early-December trips.
Bansko or Borovets: which one suits you
- Bansko
- A real town with an old quarter of stone houses, taverns and plenty of nightlife. A gondola links the town to the main ski area higher up, where most of the runs are blue and red, with some steeper terrain. Good for intermediates, groups of friends and longer stays. The morning queue at the gondola can be long in peak weeks, so many skiers start early.
- Borovets
- Bulgaria's oldest mountain resort, set in pine forest below Musala, the highest peak in the Balkans. It is more compact, with the hotels close to the lifts, and has a good choice of gentle slopes and ski schools. Good for beginners, families with children and shorter trips, since it is the closer of the two to Sofia.
Getting there from Sofia Airport
Borovets is the easier drive: about 1 hour 15 minutes from Sofia Airport, heading south-east via Samokov and then climbing gently through the forest to the resort. The last section is a mountain road where snow is common in winter.
Bansko is about 2 hours 15 minutes away. The route follows the Struma motorway south from Sofia, then leaves it and crosses the Predela pass towards Razlog and Bansko. The motorway section is quick; the pass is the part most affected by snowfall and can slow traffic considerably on stormy days.
Winter tyres are required in Bulgaria during the winter months, and snow chains may be needed on mountain roads in heavy snow. Local transfer drivers who make these trips every week know the conditions; with a private transfer booked through HotelTaxi, the vehicle is equipped for winter and goes straight to your hotel.
Weekends, holidays and what to book early
The busiest periods are the Christmas and New Year weeks and the winter school holidays in Bulgaria and in the UK and other European source markets, typically from late January through February. Saturday is the classic changeover day for package holidays, so the roads to both resorts and the airport are busiest then, and Bulgarian skiers from Sofia add to the traffic on Friday evenings and weekends.
Book hotels, ski school places and equipment hire early for these weeks. Ski passes are sold by the resort operators; Bansko's early-booking prices for season passes run until 1 December 2026, while day passes are bought on site or online closer to the time.
If you bring your own skis or snowboard, declare them when you book your transfer so a vehicle with enough room is sent. Groups with several board bags usually need a minivan rather than a car.
Practical checklist for a Bulgarian ski week
Two weeks before
Check the resort's latest opening news, book ski school and equipment hire, and reserve your airport transfer with the flight number.
Packing
Helmet, goggles, layers for cold mornings and some cash in euro, Bulgaria's currency since January 2026, for small mountain huts.
Arrival day
Share your flight number so the driver can follow delays. Expect the mountain stretch to take longer after fresh snow.
Departure day
Plan the pickup using the return rule above and keep your ski bags packed the night before.
