Bali at Christmas and New Year 2026: Ubud, Canggu or Uluwatu?

Bali over Christmas and New Year: rainy-season reality, peak demand and traffic, Ubud vs Canggu vs Uluwatu vs east Bali, and Galungan dates in January 2027.

Bali over the holidays: rain, crowds and what that really means

Christmas and New Year fall in Bali’s rainy season, which usually runs from about November to March. In practice this rarely means grey days from morning to night: heavy tropical showers often come in the afternoon or evening, with sunny or bright spells in between, and the island is at its greenest. Humidity is high and some days are simply wet, so plan flexible days rather than a fixed outdoor schedule.

At the same time, the second half of December is one of Bali’s busiest periods of the year, with international holidaymakers and domestic school holidays overlapping. Villas, flights and New Year’s Eve events book out early, and roads in the south become very slow.

Ubud, Canggu, Uluwatu or east Bali

Ubud: culture and greenery
Rice terraces, temples, dance performances, yoga and cooking classes. A good base for rainy days, as there is plenty to do indoors. Evenings are slightly cooler than on the coast.
Canggu: cafés, surf and beach clubs
Black-sand beaches, surf schools, co-working cafés and lively New Year’s Eve parties. Narrow lanes and heavy scooter traffic make getting around slow in peak season.
Uluwatu: cliffs and ocean views
Clifftop hotels, beaches reached by steps, the temple at Uluwatu with its evening kecak dance. Its famous west-facing surf breaks are at their best in the dry season; in the wet season many surfers head to the east coast.
Sidemen and Amed: east Bali
Sidemen is a quiet rice valley with views towards Mount Agung. Amed is a strip of fishing villages with black-sand beaches and calm snorkelling and diving. Both are a good escape from the busy south.

Galungan and Kuningan in January 2027

Galungan, one of the most important Balinese Hindu festivals, follows the 210-day pawukon calendar. The next Galungan falls on Wednesday 13 January 2027, and Kuningan, which closes the festive period, on Saturday 23 January 2027. If you stay into mid-January, you will see tall decorated bamboo poles called penjor lining the streets and families in ceremonial dress heading to temples.

Some shops and family-run businesses close around these days and traffic near temples can be slower. Visitors are welcome to watch respectfully: wear a sarong and sash when entering a temple, do not step in front of people praying and ask before taking photos.

Airport transfers and traffic in peak season

I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) is in the south of the island, near Kuta and Jimbaran. Without heavy traffic, Uluwatu is about 45 minutes away, Canggu about 1 hour, Ubud about 1 hour 30 minutes, Sidemen about 2 hours and Amed about 3 hours. Between Christmas and New Year, and especially in the late afternoon and evening, traffic can add a lot to these times, particularly around Canggu, Seminyak and Ubud.

A private transfer booked in advance, for example through HotelTaxi, means a driver waits in arrivals with a name sign, which helps after a long-haul flight or with children. Declare surfboards when booking so a vehicle with enough space is sent. On the way home, allow a generous buffer: for an evening flight from Canggu or Ubud, leave well earlier than the normal drive time suggests.

A sample route over the festive weeks

  1. Arrival: Uluwatu or Canggu

Stay close to the airport for the first nights and celebrate Christmas by the sea.

  2. Before New Year: Ubud

Move inland for culture, rice terraces and indoor options on rainy afternoons.

  3. Early January: Sidemen or Amed

Swap the crowds for quiet villages, snorkelling and mountain views.

  4. Mid-January: Galungan

If your trip lasts, see the penjor and temple ceremonies around 13 January 2027.
