Piazzale Roma is where the road into Venice ends. Cars cannot go any further: from here you continue to your hotel by vaporetto, water taxi or on foot. This page explains how that last stretch works so you can plan your arrival.
Why does the car stop at Piazzale Roma?
The historic centre of Venice is built on islands linked by canals and footbridges. There are no streets for cars, so every road vehicle, from a city bus to a private minivan, turns around at Piazzale Roma on the western edge of the city.
Your driver brings you to the square and helps unload your bags. Decide on the next step before you land, especially if you arrive late or with heavy luggage.
From the arrivals hall to your hotel
Meet the driver
The driver waits in arrivals with your name sign. The meeting spot is confirmed by phone or WhatsApp before you land.
Cross the lagoon
The road follows the mainland past Mestre and then crosses the Ponte della Libertà, the long causeway over the lagoon, to Piazzale Roma.
Choose your onward option
Take a vaporetto along the Grand Canal, book a water taxi to a jetty near your hotel, or walk if you are staying in Santa Croce or near the station.
Vaporetto, water taxi or walking
- Vaporetto
- Public water buses leave from stops next to Piazzale Roma and run along the Grand Canal and around the city. Good value, but crowded in peak season and awkward with large suitcases.
- Water taxi
- A private motorboat from the Piazzale Roma area to a jetty close to your hotel. The most comfortable choice with luggage, booked separately from your car transfer.
- On foot
- Hotels in Santa Croce, around the railway station and in parts of Cannaregio or Dorsoduro can be within walking distance. Expect bridges with steps and narrow lanes.
Luggage and bridges
Venice is a walking city, and its many footbridges have steps. Wheeled suitcases are hard work over long distances, so pack light or plan a water taxi for the last stretch. In autumn and winter, acqua alta can flood low-lying areas such as parts of San Marco for a few hours, and a short boat ride is then easier than walking with bags.
Frequently asked questions
Can the driver take me to San Marco?
No. No car can reach San Marco or any other part of the historic centre. The transfer ends at Piazzale Roma, and from there San Marco is reached by vaporetto, water taxi or a longer walk.
Is the water taxi included in the price?
No. The price covers the private road transfer from VCE to Piazzale Roma. A water taxi or vaporetto ticket for the onward trip is arranged and paid separately.
Is a car to Piazzale Roma worth it compared with a boat from the airport?
It suits travellers who want a fixed price, a driver at arrivals and a quick ride by road, or who stay near Piazzale Roma. If your hotel is right on a canal far from the square, a boat may get you closer.
What happens during Carnival?
During Carnival in February, the area around Piazzale Roma is very busy and vaporetti are full. Allow extra time for the onward trip and consider booking a water taxi in advance.
