From
Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport (SAI)
To
Siem Reap town
Distance
46 km
Typical drive
56–70 min

That is a longer ride than many travellers expect, because the airport that opened in 2023 lies far out in the countryside east of the city rather than next to it.

How long is the drive from SAI to Siem Reap?

Count on about an hour door to door. The first part runs on a new, quiet access road through rice fields and villages; the second part joins National Road 6 as it enters Siem Reap from the east, where traffic thickens with motorbikes, tuk-tuks and tour buses.

Evening arrivals usually move faster than late-morning ones. Your driver handles the route; you only need to share your flight number so the pickup follows any delay.

Which part of town is your hotel in?

Old Market and Pub Street
The busiest grid of restaurants, bars and guesthouses. Some lanes are closed to cars in the evening, so the driver may stop at the nearest corner.
Riverside and Wat Bo
Boutique hotels and quieter streets along both banks of the Siem Reap River, within walking distance of the centre.
Sivatha Boulevard and the temple road
Larger hotels and resorts line the main roads north towards the Angkor park, convenient for early sunrise starts.
Outlying villas and retreats
Some resorts sit down sandy lanes outside the centre. Give the exact hotel name so the provider can plan the last stretch.

Arriving in the busy season

From November to March the town fills with temple visitors, and flights from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok often land within the same few hours. Booking ahead means your driver is already waiting rather than you negotiating at the kerb after a long day.

In the rainy months, roughly June to October, short heavy showers can flood low streets in town for an hour or so. Drivers know which roads drain quickly.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the airport transfer to Siem Reap take an hour?

The current airport, SAI, was built about 50 km east of the city to protect the Angkor temples and allow larger aircraft. The old airport near town no longer handles passenger flights.

Can I be dropped right at my guesthouse near Pub Street?

Usually yes, but some streets around Pub Street are pedestrianised in the evening. In that case the driver stops at the closest accessible point, normally a short walk away.

How much luggage fits in a standard car?

Two or three medium suitcases plus hand luggage. If you travel with larger cases, golf bags or bicycles, choose a minivan and declare the items when booking.

Can I stop at a cash machine or shop on the way?

A short stop can often be arranged with the driver on the day, but it is a private ride with a fixed price, so mention it when you meet. Siem Reap town has plenty of cash machines near the Old Market.

Is there a night-time surcharge?

Any time-of-day pricing is already included in the total shown before booking. You will not be asked to pay extra in the car.
