Cars cannot go everywhere here, so drop-off works differently from a beach resort.
From the airport onto the island
The drive leaves Port Reitz, crosses the causeway onto Mombasa island and follows the city's main roads east towards the old harbour. You will pass busy markets and commercial streets; traffic is heaviest on weekday mornings and late afternoons.
The final approach is along the roads circling the Fort Jesus area, at the edge of the Old Town.
Narrow lanes and drop-off
Inside the Old Town many lanes are too narrow for cars or are one-way. The driver takes you to the nearest accessible point to your guesthouse, often near Fort Jesus or on one of the bordering streets. Guesthouse staff often meet guests there and help with luggage; it is worth asking your host in advance.
Pack in a bag you can carry or roll a short distance over uneven stone.
Good to know for an Old Town stay
- Fort Jesus
- The 16th-century Portuguese fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the natural starting point for walking the quarter.
- Dress and timing
- This is a mainly Muslim neighbourhood. Modest clothing is appreciated, especially when visiting mosques and markets.
- Evenings
- Lanes are quieter after dark. Ask your host about the best way back if you dine elsewhere in the city.
Indicative prices
Usually around €20–30 for a standard car with one to three passengers, and around €30–45 for a minivan for up to about seven. The exact price is shown before you book.
Because the drive is short, the price difference between car and minivan is small. For families with several suitcases the larger vehicle makes the walk from the drop-off point easier, since everything can be unloaded in one go.
Frequently asked questions
Can the car stop right at my guesthouse in the Old Town?
Often not. Many lanes are pedestrian-width, so the driver stops at the nearest point a car can reach. Your guesthouse can usually send someone to help.
How long is the drive from Moi Airport to Fort Jesus?
About 21–27 minutes for 11 km in normal traffic. Weekday rush hours on the island can make it longer.
When should I leave the Old Town for my flight?
Around three and a half hours before an international flight, including a buffer for city traffic. Arrange to meet the driver at the same accessible point where you were dropped.
Is the Old Town a good base for beach trips?
It suits culture and food more than beach time. Nyali is the nearest beach area, across the Nyali bridge, and the south coast is reached via the Likoni ferry.
