The journey crosses the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass, one of the great mountain roads of Morocco. On the far side the landscape turns dry and open, with kasbahs, oases and the routes to the desert.

Over the Tizi n'Tichka: what the drive is like

The route follows the N9 from Marrakech. After the plain, the road climbs through Berber villages and the small town of Taddert, then rises in a long series of bends to the pass at about 2,200 m. It is fully paved and in regular use by trucks and coaches, but it is a true mountain road with hairpins and steep drops.

On the southern side the road descends into a stony, sun-bleached landscape towards Ouarzazate. Drivers usually stop once or twice, often near Taddert or at the pass, for a break and a view.

Ouarzazate as a base

Ouarzazate is a calm town known for its film studios, the Taourirt kasbah and its role as the gateway to the Draa Valley, the Skoura palm grove and the Dadès gorges. Hotels range from town-centre properties to kasbah-style guesthouses on the outskirts, most with easy car access.

Aït Ben Haddou, the fortified village often seen in films, lies a short way before Ouarzazate. If you would like to stop there, ask for it when booking, as it adds time and changes the price.

Before you set off

Car sickness
The climb has many bends. Sit facing forward, eat lightly beforehand and tell the driver if you need a pause.
Clothing
It can be much colder at the pass than in Marrakech, even on a sunny day. Keep a warm layer in the cabin, not in the boot.
Arriving late
On an evening flight, much of the mountain section is driven in darkness. Some travellers prefer to spend the first night in Marrakech and cross in daylight.

Returning from Ouarzazate to your flight

Allow up to almost five hours for the trip back over the pass. For an international flight, a pickup about seven and a half hours before departure is a sensible rule, with extra margin in winter when snow is possible on the Tichka.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the transfer from Marrakech Airport to Ouarzazate take?

The drive is 199 km and typically takes 225–282 minutes. Breaks, a stop at Aït Ben Haddou or winter weather on the pass add time.

How much does a private transfer to Ouarzazate cost?

As an indication, usually around €130–170 for a standard car with up to 3 passengers and €160–210 for a minivan with up to about 7. The exact price is shown before you book.

Is the Tizi n'Tichka road safe?

It is the main paved road over the High Atlas and carries regular traffic. It is winding and steep in places, which is why it is driven by local drivers who know it, and it can be closed temporarily after snow.

Can I stop at Aït Ben Haddou on the way?

Can I continue from Ouarzazate to the desert?

Ouarzazate is the usual starting point for trips to the Draa Valley and the dunes further south. Onward transfers are booked separately.
